One of the people in this photo - needs no introduction. He is, perhaps, the greatest freediver of our time.
Ingo Riepl, on the other hand - does. He is somewhat reclusive. I believe he bought his land and built his house about 1979, when Dahab was a small Bedouin encampment. I dont know of any other foreigner who has been living consistently in Dahab for anything like that long.
Today a Dahab “old hand“ has been living there a few months or the realy “old hands“ less than half that length of time.
Ingo is a world class photographer , land and sea, and has an enormous collection of photos of the Sinai as it was. He recorded all the different Bedouin tribes in their traditional costumes, these pictures are works of art , of great beauty and expressiveness. He also recorded the Red Sea , at a time of incredible richness, when we first met and lived together under canvas in Ras Mohamed.
Today it is difficult to remember that richness as nothing remains, a fantasy land of coral, giants schools of pelagic fish, mantas, hammerhead sharks and the great oceanic sharks .
Today it saddens me , I have nothing to show my grand children.
On this website Ingo shows a selection of his pictures from 1979 to today. https://ingo.dahabdivers.com/en/index.html
