In Saotome Shihan's Aikido Schools of Ueshiba the idea of 'the line' is central. 'The line' is the straight line that connects uke and nage. When my stance aligns with this line, I can feel how much more powerful my movements become. Very often, when I'm struggling, I can recover simply by correcting this alignment. I move so that my stance is aligned and so that uke's stance is not. The line is thin and it matters a lot, so small adjustments can radically change my effectiveness. What seemed like a problem of force is revealed to be a problem of position.

Long ago in a style called Seidokan Aikido, my first teachers emphasized the continuity of the inner attitude and its expression in movement. They told me that I cannot create cooperative movement unless I cultivate a cooperative attitude. If I have real pleasure in the shared practice, my partner will feel connected and invited and will move easily. I found the idea compelling but challenging. There was much frustrated searching for internal joy and moments of insight into the teaching's truth. Years later, I still hold this to be one of the most important teachings I've received, but it remains one of the most challenging. I wish I understood it well enough to be able to offer it to my students, but I'm not there yet.

I will gladly hear more about the connection between inner being and outer behavio in Aikido and in life.

Aikidoka have friends that they talk to over beer or coffee. They also have close friends they rarely talk to. There are people I know well, but I have no idea where they work or how many children they have. I know their physicality, their movement, the feeling of connecting to them, the openness or hesitation of their bodies, their smile, and their moods. I know them intimately, and I love them no less deeply than I love my other friends. This way of knowing probably isn't unique to aikido: I imagine you can find it in other martial arts and also in social dance. Still, I learned this style of friendship through aikido, and it touches me deeply.

We are human and limited and we have been studying Aikido for only a few months or years. Our Aikido can only be what it is right now, today. Our partner is the same: human, limited and with the Aikido they bring to this moment. We must each accept this situation in order to do Aikido together. When we accept it with grace, our aikido will feel connected, realistic, and sincere. We learn this in Aikido, but it is the same in everything we do.

Through practice, we learn that it takes many years and many hours of steady persistence for practice to become skill, for skill to become craft, and for craft to become art. Our teachers tell us that even then we are only taking our first steps. Many years of growth still lie ahead. Success requires patience and compassion.

In the Netherlands, a PhD defense is a ritual. The candidate addresses the members of the committee as “learned opponent.” Beside the candidate stand two good friends, the paranymphs. Traditionally, they are there to catch the candidate if they faint and stop them if they try to run away. The candidate meets the opponents openly: with respect, perhaps also with apprehension, but not defensively. It is indeed called a defense, but the candidate’s actual goal is not to defend. The candidate has done the work and written the thesis; they are the ones who understand most fully its strengths and weaknesses. Out of respect for the academic values of open discussion and critique, the candidate is exposing themselves and their work to the opponents’ questions. They share a common purpose with the opponents: to create a rigorous discussion of the deeper issues at stake that will be meaningful to all of them. This is not something the candidate can do by themselves. They cannot determine or dominate the process. They do not choose the questions the opponents will ask. A fruitful discussion can develop only when the candidate works with the opponents and the issues they raise. There is much in this ritual to inspire us. We should also meet our fears with openness and vulnerability, without becoming defensive. They cannot be conquered or defeated, and they should not be denied or ignored. We should engage seriously and respectfully with our opponents, seeking to see our strengths and weaknesses clearly. It is up to us whether we see our opponents and fears as limitations or openings for learning and growth. I believe Aikido teaches us how to do this.

I was recently at a seminar on non-violent approaches to securing public events. It reminded me of a course I took a couple of years ago training me to teach empowered self-defence as an approach to bullying and harassment. Learning public security is not the same as learning self defence and self defence is not non-violent. Still, in both I felt that what there was a kinship to Aikido. Aikido is many things, but perhaps in its heart it is about being assertive without being aggressive. For that, you need to be willing to stop and assess before you act. You need stability and relaxation and focus. You need awareness and sensitivity. However, perhaps most of all, you need to make the choice. You need to understand the value.

Aikido teaches through two assigned roles. The uke gives energy: they strike, push, or grab. The nage receives that energy, perhaps meeting it, yielding to it, or redirecting it. In training the roles are fixed. I practice being uke four times so you can practice being nage. Then we switch. Each role only makes sense because of the other. In real life, things are rarely so clear. We all bring energy into a situation. We try to influence events and move them in the direction we think is right. At the same time, we receive and respond to the energy others bring. We meet it, yield to it, and ideally guide it toward a path that works for both of us. The more we listen and truly accept the energy directed toward us, the better we can direct it productively. Even—perhaps especially—when we are leaders, managers, or initiators, being effective means knowing how to receive the energy of others with respect. Look carefully at the picture. Can you tell who is uke and who is nage in this moment? Who is giving the energy, and who is receiving and directing it?
