🏆 GOLFER OF THE YEAR – LEADERBOARD UPDATE

The Golfer of the Year table has had another reshuffle, and there are now more twists & turns in this than me going down the Par 5 across the road!

🥇 Tom O’Donoghue – 292 pts

Tom, like a prime Sonia O'Sullivan, has finally hit the front coming around the final bend! Another prize-giving appearance incoming following a superb 40pts last weekend in the worst of the conditions on Sunday afternoon.

🥈 Michael O’Donoghue – 290 pts

Michael is just two points back and off his low handicap is playing some unbelievable golf, averaging 36.25pts across his 8 scores

🥉 Eric Desmond – 285 pts

Eric has quietly worked his way into third with the sort of steady golf that annoys everyone else. No drama, no headlines, just appearing on leaderboards!

🥉 Paddy Connery – 285 pts

Paddy is level with Eric and now firmly in the conversation. There’s a dangerous amount of form appearing here, scoring 38pts & 41pts in the last 2 events.

🏆 Fergal Coleman – 284 pts

The defending champion is sitting fifth, just eight points off the lead. Plenty left to play for, we hope he's well rested for his 54 holes of golf this weekend! 😉

Only 8 points separate the top five.

🏌️‍♂️⛳ Donie McCarthy Memorial – Results ⛳🏌️‍♂️

A brilliant weekend at Youghal Golf Club for the Donie McCarthy Memorial, played over the 4th, 5th & 6th of September on the Youghal Bay Course.

This one always means a lot to the club.

Donie was a former Captain, a huge part of Youghal Golf Club and, most importantly, an absolute gentleman. It was great to see such a strong turnout again this year and so many members out playing in his memory.

A special thank you, as always, to the McCarthy family for their continued support of the competition.

There was some serious scoring across the weekend, with Martin Baylor (12) taking the overall win with an excellent 43 points.

🏆 Matchplay 2026 – The Story So Far

After a summer of matchplay golf, we’re getting down to the business end of both competitions.

The McGinty Matchplay is down to its final, and both have taken the long road to get there.

Martin & Niall Baylor started in the preliminary round, coming through Joe Moore & Liam Sloane, Billy Joyce & Andrew Joyce, Michael Griffin & Dave McConnell, before seeing off Vinnie Coonan & Shane Dalton in the semi-final.

Waiting for them are John O’Regan & Eugene Moriarty, who have had an equally busy route. They’ve accounted for Peter & Robbie Deady, Fergal & Donogh Coleman, Victor & Killian Cahill, and finally John K Murphy & Graham O’Mahony to book their place in the final.

🏆 One match left. One McGinty title up for grabs.

The Morrissey Matchplay has reached the semi-final stage, with four players left standing.

Victor Cahill has come through Tom O’Donovan, Noel Leahy and John O’Regan and will now face Donogh Coleman, who has beaten David Twomey Jr, Peter Deady and Michael Sheehan on his way to the last four.

On the other side, Kieran Browne has had the longest road of the Morrissey, starting in the preliminary round and beating Thomas Connell, John Keniry, Aidan O’Neill and Robbie Cuthbert. He’ll face Sean O’Connell, who has made his way through Robert Deady, Fergal Coleman and Pat Glavin.

Some serious golf played to get this far, and now there’s very little between the remaining players.

🏆 Prize Presentation Evening at Youghal Golf Club

A great evening in the clubhouse as we presented the prizes from two of our recent competitions, the Red Store Open Singles and the Pat Clancy Memorial.

🔵 The Red Store Open Singles

Played over three days from 14th–16th August, there was some excellent scoring, with Shane Smiddy producing the round of the competition to take first place with a superb 46 points.

Maurice McCarthy followed with an excellent 43 points, while Damien Lenane, playing off 5, took Best Gross with 36 gross points. Eugene O’Connor was also among the leading finishers with 42 points.

Congratulations also to our daily and category winners who picked up their prizes on the night.

A big thank you to The Red Store for their sponsorship and continued support of golf at Youghal. It is hugely appreciated.

🔵 Pat Clancy Memorial

The second presentation of the evening was for a competition that holds a particularly special place in the club calendar.

Pat Clancy was a former Captain and President of Youghal Golf Club, serving as Captain in 1994 and President in 2003 and 2004. Pat served the club with distinction and was an ever-present figure around Youghal Golf Club for many years.

On the course, Paul O’Driscoll and Alan Cullagh led the way with excellent scores of 6 Up, with Sean O’Connell and Sean Broderick close behind on 5 Up. Paul Moylan, playing off scratch, claimed Best Gross after finishing Level.

It was especially nice to have Pat’s wife Mona, sons Turlough & Eamonn, daughter Darina, and the Clancy family with us for the presentation.

A special thank you to the family for being part of the evening and for helping us continue a competition that keeps Pat’s memory and his contribution to Youghal Golf Club very much alive.

👏 Congratulations to all of our prize winners from both competitions, and thanks to everyone who joined us for the presentations.

On behalf of our club members Risteard, Philip, Kevin and Tony we would like to sincerely thank all those of you who kindly supported our recent golf challenge, 4 Provinces in 24 hours. The cheque of €8,328 was presented to Youghal Meals on Wheels last week who were so appreciative of the efforts and support by Youghal Golf Club. Photos attached also includes volunteers from Meals on Wheels, Club President Peter Murray and Lady VC Martina Crowe.

Things are getting serious at the top of the Golfer of the Year standings…

🥇Michael O’Donoghue – 283 pts

The swashbuckling Michael O’Donoghue leads the way, playing phenomenal golf. The booming drives might not always go down the right fairway, but they generally go down a fairway. And when things go wrong, he recovers better than Lazarus after a long weekend.

🥈Fergal Coleman – 281 pts

The reigning Golfer of the Year is just two points back. Based on recent matchplay form, sources suggest Fergal has decided to focus solely on retaining his Golfer of the Year title. The social media team has also received unconfirmed reports that a small Credit Union loan was required to fund the sheer volume of re-entry money spent on the Pat Clancy V-Par.

🥉Tom O’Donoghue – 280 pts

And then there’s the evergreen Tom O’Donoghue, lurking just three points off the lead. Tom now has his own reserved seat at prize-giving nights, and our statisticians reckon he’s collected more prizes than Tiger did in 2000. The mantelpiece is under ferocious pressure!

Just three points separate the top three, with Eric Desmond and Ger Ahern not far behind.

Plenty of golf still to be played. This could get interesting.
