Race update

Mckeown takes the first win of the season

Conor was in action in the Castlebar GP on Sunday on a wet and very windy day in the west. It was a C1/C2 race with an early break of 6 going up the road with all the local clubs represented. Conor had no option but to set a hard pace and drag them back catching the break after 30k before kicking on solo over the man climb with 60k to go quickly growing the gap out to 2 minutes in the cross winds and opening it up to 3 minutes into the head wind, as he headed for the run in to the finish line, winning in comfortable fashion.

The DES

James, Sean and Luke tackled the growling famous des hanlon. The weather was grim and the racing was hard with a lightening fast start and continuous attacks from the gun. On the first climb the race split and groups all over the road with the 3 lads sitting in the main bunch fighting hard to get the race back together. The attacks came coming and it was a true race of nutrition and resistance

Next up it’s a road trip to Kerry for Ras Mumhan

Well done Conor 💪

Moynalty cycling club Saturday spin to for some well deserved warm tea and incredible coffee, a nice sweet treat or the signature 'Gobbler' sandwich. We had a mixed bag of weather this morning with some sun ☀️, rain 🌧, sleet and an unrelenting headwind to test the resolve of any weekend warrior. 21 cyclists out today for some fresh air, exercise with a fair bit of banter flying around and a couple of punctures thrown in for good luck.

Moynalty Cycling Club (racing) update

Ras mhaigh eo

An excellent team result from Moynalty over the weekend.

Stage 1
Conor and James came down in the opening stages and began chasing hard to get back in after a bike change, just as they made contact, Joey made the 3 man break of the day after 30k and holding off a fast charging bunch till the end where Luke and a small group nipped off the front of the chasing pack, to chance a sniff of victory in the closing stages just missing the final bridge to finish 3rd and 4th with Conor and James finishing in the reduced bunch.

Stage 2 TT
The lads powered into a strong headwind on a straight rolling 8km course with Joey in 8th, Luke 10th, Conor 12th and James 40th

Stage 3
Queen stage. 3 climbs within 15km of each other with all to play for with 3 Montalty riders within 1min 20’sec of GC. The racing was fast, with no moves sticking and Joey getting a very unlucky puncture in the run up to the first KOH which was rode at a hectic pace with the back door of the bunch wide open, all Moynalty riders made it over the 3 KOH just as Joey fought his way back into the bunch after the climbs. On the last climb 3 riders got away, with a lot of cat and mouse from the chasing group on the way in the road, not helping to get the group back. Luke made a sticking move with 20k to go and bridged across to the break to claim another 6th on the stage with the 3 other lads finishing in the reduced bunch.

GC position and overall timing below:

Luke 4th @40”
Joey 9th @1.29”

Flaherty makes a comeback.
Sean and Mikey was out in drogheda tackling a fast 116km course. An early break of 10 riders got away with Mikey and Sean working well within the bunch and both lads finishing in the Top 20 in a stacked field.

Well done to all the riders over the weekend and we would like to express a gracious thanks to Enda and Andrew for director sportif/physio/mechanic support.

Moynalty Cycling Club weekly update - On Saturday we had a nice ☀️ sunny spin to the beautiful town of Trim with 18 members out enjoying the bright bit slightly chilly weather, coupled with a few punctures it was an enjoyable morning all the same.

On Saturday at the Lucan GP, our Moynalty Cycling Club team—Luke Smith, Conor McKeown, and Joey Mullin—took on a blistering 93 km race. The pace was insane from the start, hitting 47 km/h in the first half hour. It was non-stop, with no breaks getting away, constantly reeling back groups of six and seven. Sadly, Luke had a mechanical and was forced out, but Conor and Joey stayed strong. and in a massive effort, Joey made the bridge to the lead group of eight. Conor bridged to the second group nearly coming in contact with the first group. Then, in a powerful sprint, Joey claimed a strong P6 and Conor got P12 Incredible ride from the whole team—onward and upward for Ras Mayo

On Sunday we had another bunch of hardy cyclists mad for the tar and had a nice spin trying to Dodge the showers, finished off with a coffee stop in Loughcrew Gardens.

Meanwhile Luke, trying his hand at this running malarkey finished 2nd in the Carlow Duathlon. Well done to Luke.
