➡️ Swipe through for all you need to know about Sound Machines, commonly referred to as "White Noise"

❓ I am regularly asked by my 1:1 clients whether or not a sound machine is necessary? And the short answer is NO.

⬇️

Sound Machines are not *necessary* for all babies / children.
💙 Nothing works for everyone 💙
But for *some* babies / children they can work really well, acting as a helpful sleep association, which can help pave the way for more independent sleeping.

🧐 So do read on to find out why a noise machine MAY help, different types of sounds, how to use them & much more ➡️

⚠️ I do think it's always important for parents to have realistic expectations on their child's sleep.
Sure adding a sound machine *may* potentially help create a calmer sleep environment for your child, but it is unlikely to be a magic bullet solving all sleep problems if you are struggling 🤷
Sleep issues are generally multifactorial & require an in depth approach, adding white noise may be one part of the 🧩

Clocks Go Backwards Saturday 29th October ⏲️

So what can you do❓❓❓

Read the tips below, hopefully they will help ⬇️

➡️Firstly if you have an older baby or sensitive LO who struggles with change & thrives on routine, you may want to take a more proactive approach.
In the 6 days leading up to the hour change take your child's bedtime forward by 10 minutes, the hour should then be readjusted before the clocks change.
It's also a good idea to shift meal times & naptimes forward too, trying to realign your child's body ⏲️.

➡️ Alternatively you could start by waking your child up 10 minutes later each morning, this should have a similar knock on effect for naps and hopefully bedtime🤞
❌ This will not work on a baby with an established body ⏲️ used to waking up at specific time.
☑️ It may work well on children who need to be woken in the morning. But it may not suit getting out the 🚪 for school / work on time in the morning 🤦.

➡️ Finally you could just DO NOTHING!!!
The school of thought I belong to 😜 I just let my children wake up at their usual time & go with the flow from there, accepting we may have a bumpy week ahead on the sleep front & try to navigate it as best we can.
It takes some the stress out of the situation & will resolve itself as it does for us adults.

✨Some general 💤 tips are getting plenty of exposure to broad spectrum daylight ☀️ throughout the day, this is the best way to recalibrate the circadian rhythm to the new time.

✨ The brain 🧠 can use other external influences (known as 'zeitgebers') like food & exercise to reset the body clock, so moving mealtimes & getting plenty of exercise will help.

✨ Another simple tip, if your LO enjoys a 🛁 as part of bedtime routine, try & make it a little longer. This will help stretch out time in the evening & relax your child in the process, or if your little one is more lively help shake off some of the excess energy splashing about in the bath 💦.

ℹ️ For Early Risers check out my post on Early Rising, it may help in advance of clock change, for those worried about an even earlier start to the day 🤞

Let me know what approach you hope to take in the comments below 👇

Temperament & Sleep 💤

✨ Have you ever ended up stressed as a parent because your baby won't fall asleep despite following all the "Sleep Rules" 🤯

Early Sleepy Cues identified ☑️
Wake window for age followed ☑️
Attempting to put your LO down "drowsy but awake" only results in tears 😭.You end up feeling demoralized as if you are somehow failing as a parent or worse still that there is something wrong with your LO, they are broken in some way.

What if I told you a massive part of your child's ability to sleep is down to their unique temperament? It is NOT a reflection of your parenting skills 💙

Sure some babies WILL fall asleep pretty easily with minimal input from a caregiver. These babies are born with a more laid back temperament.

But we also have more sensitive LO's who struggle to fall asleep despite a full belly & ideal sleep environment. A little shush or pat is not enough for these LO’s. 💙These are the babies that NEED more parental help to get to sleep 💙. These babies NEED you to nurse / feed/ rock / hold them. They are not trying to defy or manipulate you in anyway. Young babies do not have the brain maturity capable of this. ❌

💡 It can be a revelation for many parents to realise this, baby is not broke, you are not doing anything wrong.
💙Responsively co-regulating your baby in the way that they require will lay the necessary foundations required for emotional self regulation in time.

Responsiveness is not "a bad habit". All babies are different & all will require varying levels of comfort.

Trust me you are not doing anything wrong. 💙

I have 3 children & thought I knew it all sleep-wise when my youngest was born. What I didn't realise initially was that he had a very different temperament. Highly alert to everything going on in the environment around him. Following the silly sleep rules that had worked so well for his more laid back sisters did not work. I felt like I was somehow failing. 😭

BUT I wasn't & if you have a more sensitive little one, neither are you.

✔️ Embrace their temperament, ignore the rule book, respond in a way that works for your little one & it will be the most useful sleep tool you have at your disposal 💙

Self Care is Not Selfish 📣

And repeat after me "Self Care is not Selfish", it is a necessity especially for mother's 💙

All too often we hear about women, mother's in particular suffering from parental burnout 🤯They constantly put the needs of others first, selflessly neglecting their own.

➡️ But this comes at a price 😥 We cannot pour from an empty cup so the saying goes. Neglecting our own needs is not good for us or our children ⚠️

💡"Reframing" how we look at things can really help ⬇️
Think of the analogy of the oxygen masks on an aeroplane.
During the safety briefing parents are ALWAYS advised to put on their own mask first, before putting on your child's.
Your natural instinct is to look after your child first, BUT what would happen to your child if in the process of putting on their mask you lost consciousness. Neither of you would end up with a mask on 😥.
The same rings true in parenting - in order to look after your child's needs it is IMPERATIVE you look after your own 💙

Self Care is not a contest ❌ It is not helpful to compare what someone elses idea of self care is to what you can realistically expect to do. The main thing is you take *some* time to do something that you enjoy, no matter how simple or short that activity is 💙

Acts of self care don't necessarily mean adding to your to do list either, they can be as simple as creating healthy boundaries for yourself: Saying No to anything unnecessary, that is stealing your precious time & energy 💙

How has self care changed for you since becoming a mother ❓ I would love to know, please share in comments below 👇

5 Signs you have a Low Sleep Needs Child:

❓ Could it be that your child doesn't have a sleep issue?

❓Could it be that the reason they don't fall into recommended "Wake Windows", never take long naps, have never fit into genetic sleep schedules ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

IS BECAUSE THEY ARE LOW SLEEP NEEDS 🤷

✨ Just like us adults have a degree of variability in sleep needs, children are exactly the same. While the majority fall somewhere in the middle, there are outliers either side, the higher sleep needs kiddos need higher than average amounts of sleep, whereas the lower sleep needs kids are on the lower end of the spectrum.

Do read on to find out more ➡️

✨ If you suspect your little one is low sleep needs it can be transformative to acknowledge that your child is not broken, you are not doing anything wrong, they just need a lower amount of sleep than other kiddos 💙
✨ Trying to reframe how you look at sleep for your child through the lens of "lower sleep needs" can be a game-changer.
✨ The reality is we cannot make a child sleep any longer than they are biologically capable of. Trying to do so can result in so much unnecessary stress for parents 😞

➡️ If you need help or are struggling with a low sleep needs child do reach out. I have a lot of experience in this area 💙
