I used to think equality meant everyone doing everything.
Working outdoors has challenged that idea.
I don’t have the capacity to chainsaw a large fallen oak for an hour — but I can electric-chainsaw smaller branches for a while. Different abilities, same shared task.
Physical and biological reality matters. Ignoring difference doesn’t create fairness; it creates frustration.
What makes more sense to me now is equity: equal opportunity to contribute, even if contribution looks different.
Nature works like this. Every ecosystem depends on diversity of role, strength, and timing. Nothing thrives by forcing sameness.
Maybe fairness isn’t about identical outcomes or identical effort, but about recognising reality while still valuing everyone’s participation.
Connection to nature — and to ourselves — tends to make this obvious again.
What’s your experience: sameness or balance?
