Leinster Senior Plate Round 2
Blackrock College 1 C.B.S. Tullamore 2
C.B.S. made their second trip to Dublin in 48 hours and overcame the handicap of playing without two regular defenders Pat Berry and Joe Moran ,both injured., to secure a place in the quarter finals of the Leinster Schools Senior Plate.
C.B.S. dominated the early exchanges in the first half. Noel O' Connor in particular shone and as a result had to take a lot of punishment from an over robust Blackrock. Tullamore's best chance in this period came midway through the half. Paul Jordan hit a low cross across the face of the goal but Cathal Killeavy just failed to make contact
Paul Jordan opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he rounded the keeper to slip the ball to the net.
Francis O'Brien ,having his best game, had the goal of the match in the 38th minute when he found the roof of the net with a long range shot. Tullamore continued to dominate and should have increase their lead. Paul Brennan ,doing some great work on the left wing, came close when he hit the side netting. Paul Jordan was deprived of a second goal when the Blackrock keeper was deceived by a high ball but the ball took a bad bounce and hit Paul on the shoulder and bounced wide.
Blackrock looked a beaten team but 12 minutes from time Paul Scanlon reduced the deficit with a swift counter attack . This goal signaled C.B.S, Tullamore's worst period and their play became very ragged but good defensive work saw them through.
It was a costly victory as Captain Noel O' Connor suffered an ankle injury.

Leinster Senior Plate Round 1 Replay
Drimnagh Castle 3 Tullamore C.B.S. 4
After Extra Time
Having conceded last minute equalisers in their previous three outings, it was an equaliser in the last minute that kept Tullamore C.B.S. in the plate competition at the away venue.
C.B.S. Tullamore's run of bad luck seemed to be continuing when a ball punched to the net gave Drimnagh the lead in the 18th minute. However Tullamore were on equal terms six minutes later with a Noel O'Connor goal.
The second half was only three minutes old when Drimnagh regained the lead with an excellent goal.
C.B.S started the game without injured defender ,ever present ,Pat Berry. This handicap was compounded when central defender Joe Moran had to leave the field..He was involved in an accidental clash of heads, midway through the second half, with Enda Hughes and broke his nose. The reshuffled defence blended well and never looked like conceding another goal. C.B.S. pushed forwarded in search of an equaliser to no avail. However with one minute on the clock Paul Brennan lost his marker to head home a Paul Jordan cross.
Drimnagh restored their lead from the kick off in extra time. The lead did not last a minute when a Drimnagh player did not spot his keeper off the line and hit a long range back pass, under pressure, over the keeper's head to the net. The game was pretty even through the rest of extra time but two minutes from time Paul Jordan scored the winner for Tullamore C.B.S.

After Extra Time
C.B.S. Tullamore were only 30 seconds away from the second round in the Leinster Senior Plate. This was their third cup draw in a row , in the space of a few weeksThe game was played in a freezing gale force wind which totally spoiled the first half. Drimnagh elected to play to play into the wind but neither side could cope with the conditions. Tullamore continuously hit the ball too long and their forwards got nothing to work with.
Things improved in the second half. The Tullamore forwards received a lot more ball and their efforts were rewarded as early as the 6th minute when Paul Brennan found the net. Eamon Whitney had the ball in the net but the referee called back play for a Tullamore free, saying the whistle had gone before Eamon scored.
Finally with 30 seconds remaining , Drimnagh cleared from a Tullamore throw and swept up field to give Terry Shiel no chance in goal.

C.B.S. Face Replay In Senior Cup
St.John's Ballyfermot 3 C.B.S. Tullamore 3
St. John's Ballyfermot snatched a late equaliser to deprive the visiting Tullamore C.B.S. of victory in the first round of the Leinster Senior Cup.
The game was played at a tremendous pace. C.B.S. were in control early on but the first clear chance fell to Ballyfermot in the 18th minute. Terry Shiel pulled off a tremendous save but was injured in the process. The game was held up for 5 minutes while he received treatment. Within 2 minutes of the resumption Ballyfermot took the lead when the still shake Terry failed to reach a cross and the rebound from the crossbar was tapped home.
C.B.S. scored a deserved equaliser 5 minutes from half time. Mark Plunkett found Alan Cunningham, who drew the keeper before passing to Paul Jordan who found the net.
Mark Plunkett gave C.B.S. the lead 5 minutes into the second half .Mark chested the ball down to Paul Jordan and was then on hand to stroke the return pass to the net. Ballyfermot equalised 9 minutes later through an excellent header. Both teams had opportunities to take the lead but the rival keepers made excellent saves.
Alan Cunningham had what seemed a legitimate goal disallowed when Eamon Whitney was penalised for a nudge on a defender. This would have been the goal of the game as Alan found the net from well outside the penalty area.
C.B.S. regained the lead in the 31st minute when Joe Moran headed home from a corner. Tullamore seemed to have the game under control but the Ballyfermot substitute found the net 1 minute from time.

Senior Provincial League Final
C.B.S.Tullamore 2 Ballyfin 1

Showing fine resources under pressure, C.B.S. Tullamore became the first team to take the Senior Provincial title twice when they overcame Ballyfin in Portarlington .
Ballyfin were on top in the opening ten minutes and their failure to get the opening score was entirely due to a fine defensive display and anticipation by Terry Shiel in goal. C.B.S. had their best period in the final fifteen minutes of the first half. They opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Paul Jordan gave the Ballyfin keeper no chance. C.B.S. could have sewn up the game in the next few minutes. The best chance was created by Alan Cunningham who ran past his marker on the left and put over an excellent cross. However Mark Plunkett failed to make contact and when the ball fell to Paul Jordan he had a fresh air.
Ballyfin began the second half in attacking style but were continually thwarted by Enda Hughes, who had an excellent game, and Joe Owens who had his best game of the campaign. Tullamore's forward line was subdued and failed to show the flair that had seen them score 13 goals in four games. However the supply of ball to them left a lot to be desired.
Ballyfin had the best of the opening twenty minutes of the second half but never looked like breaching a vigilant Tullamore defence which played as a solid unit. Terry Shiel looked unbeatable, his anticipation and ability to cut the angles made his job look easy. However he was beaten in the 67th minute when from a corner Stephen Delaney found the net from an unchallenged header. This score gave renewed impetus to Ballyfin and they should have taken the lead when the ball came back off the crossbar and the shot from the rebound hit an upright.
The game looked like going to extra time but Mark Plunkett score the decisive winner in the 42nd minute.
The difference between the finalists was Tullamore's fighting ability and the strong desire to make it two titles in a row. Ballyfin could feel unlucky not to have won but Tullamore deserved their victory by virtue of gutsy display when playing below form.

Terry Shiel, Joe Owens, Pat Berry, Enda Hughes, Joe Moran, Francis O' Brien, Eamon Whitney, Noel O' Connor, Alan Cunningham, Mark Plunkett, Noel O' Connor.

C.B.S. Were somewhat lucky to overcome Kildare in the Senior League Semi Final played in Athy .
St. Joseph's , a strong physical team, took the lead after 5 minutes. Tullamore playing well below form struggled to get on level terms and it was St. Joseph's who had the better chances in the first half.
