Lough Graney takes its name from Gráinne. In ancient folklore, it is said that she drowns herself in the lake because she was not allowed to marry the man she wanted. It is said it was the first su***de in Ireland. Her body floated down the river Graney until it came to a village, and the locals took it apon themselves to bury her,Tuamgraney, Tomb of Gráinne. This story resonates with me as my Mother took her own life in the Fergus when I was six. I felt compelled to take Gráinne's last journey myself. I plodded, waded, and swam my way down the river for five and a half hours. I saw more Kingfishers and Dippers than I've ever seen in my life and I startled a deer, we both froze and got into a staring competition (I won) but three quarters of the way there and after battling fatigue and hypothermia for quite a while I called it quits. I know how to be better prepared for next time, and I think it would be great to get a group to do it to raise money for su***de prevention.
