Super day of Athletics today at the Ferrybank open.

Taylor took part in the 80m sprint, placing 2nd in her heat in lane 7, she had a great run in the final against some super athletes but didnt place.

Onto the long jump, where she had 2 jumps. Her first jump was a 3.05 where she took a PB from last year, she was jumping a 2.96 at Munsters.
Her second jump was a huge 3.26m.
Out of 60+ athletes in the u10 long jump Taylor took a very proud 5th place overall and a huge PB.

She went up an age to join the u11 4x100 relay team where they took home a well deserved 2nd place to finish out a fantastic day🫶

🔸️Sprinting & Type 1 diabetes🔸️

Managing blood sugars as a sprinter is manageable but sometimes difficult. Sprinters are prone to high level blood glucose spikes if not managed properly pre, during & post sprints.

Unlike other sports, sprinting is high intensity anaerobic, which effects glucose in the body differently than endurance sports. The adrenaline released during sprinting can sometimes cause the liver to release glucose which can then cause temporary spikes in blood glucose, almost immediately or soon after sprinting is finished.

The muscles need to replenish glycogen so it could take hours for the blood sugars to drop and regulate again.

➡️What does this mean? The effects of hyperglycemia or high blood sugars can in many ways cause,

Fatigue, head aches, blurred vision, dehydration, reduced athletic performance.

➡️For athletes what this also means is,

Slower race times, poor recovery, muscle heaviness,

Carbs are recommended pre sprinting to help stabilise blood sugars.
Progressive warm ups can help to reduce spikes in blood sugars.
Post race, carbs and protein are recommended for recovery and to help stabilise blood sugars.

Some athletes may experience huge drops in blood sugars hours after high intensity sports so it's always good to have glucose shots or fast acting carbs close by.

Taylors blood sugars are monitored by her CGM and pump which is inserted via a canula into her stomach, on race days her pump is removed prior to her races, I montior her blood sugars by taking a finger prick measurement and attaching her pump post race to ensure she is getting her insulin dosage. 🫶
