Around this time last week we were all getting ready for the Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally.
The event would not have happened with the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers who worked so hard on the day of the rally and in the weeks leading up to it.
These volunteers came from our own Kerry Motor Club, and from neighbouring clubs like Killarney, Limerick, Cork, Skibbereen, Clare and the Ballymac Vintage Club
To each and every one of you we say thanks, we could not have done it without you. We look forward to repaying our neighbours during their events, later this year and next year. Thanks again

his weekend’s Kerry Winter Rally will be a special occasion for several Kerry-based motorsport families.

There at least four fathers and their daughters taking part in the Banna Beach Resort-based rally.

Jason and Megan Costello from Tarbert will share a rally car for the first time since a serious crash on the 2018 Circuit of Munter Rally on the Kerry Winter Rally.

Meagan has competed with several drivers since the crash but apart from a charity track day at Mondello Park in July this year he has not driven a rally car since.

Killarney bothers Charlie and John will drive their Ford Escorts at the rally.

They will be navigated by their daughters, Charlene and Michelle.

While both Charlene and Michelle have competed before, this is the first time all four members of the family will compete in the same event.

Both Charlie and John are no strangers to local rallying. This year marks Killarney-based garage man Charlie’s 40th year in the sport while John, who runs an engineering business in Headford, has been involved in motorsport for 38 years.

Charlene navigated for Charlie on a rallysprint event in Tralee around 10 years ago but she has never contested a stage rally.

Her cousin Michelle made her debut on the Rally of the Lakes, back in 2019.

“Two brothers with their two daughters having a day out in a great rally, this has to be good for motorsport. This is Charlie’s 40th year competing and my 38th year, add this together and it’s probably hard to beat anywhere in this world,” said John.

Meanwhile, former winner Mike Quinn will start the rally as one of its top ten seeds. His daughter Katie will also compete in the event driving a Honda Civic.

Motorists in Tralee are being advised to plan their journeys on Sunday as the town and surrounding areas are hosting several major events.
Kerry Motor Club’s annual Winter Rally is taking place on roads all over North Kerry.
Roads near the villages of Abbeydorney, Ardfert and Killflynn will be closed all day to facilitate the rally and diversions will be in place.
The rally’s pitstop will be in the Brandon Car Park in Tralee town centre throughout the day and as a result, the Cahersalea, Matt Talbot Road and Dan Spring Road will be much busier than usual all day.
In addition, the Tralee Marathon takes place on Sunday morning, starting in Basin View and visiting Ardfert and the Spa before the finish line on Neil Armstrong Way near Siamsa Tire.
The GAA County Football final between East and Mid Kerry is scheduled for 2.15 pm so traffic on the approach roads from the Killarney and Killorglin sides will be much busier than usual too, both in the build-up to the big match and the immediate aftermath.
Later in the day, the month-long Turuas Mor Homecoming festival will draw to a close with a spectacular fireworks display on Denny St. Streets in the town centre will be closed from approximately 4 pm to allow this special Halloween Festival to go ahead.
And finally, there is a Vinyl Record Show in the old Scout’s Hall in Garvey’s Car Park on Sunday afternoon.
“It is great for the town that there is so much going on Sunday, it will certainly be one of busiest October Bank Holiday Sunday’s ever in Tralee,” said Kerry Motor Club PRO, Sean Moriarty.
“There is something for everyone and room for everyone to enjoy each event or dip in and out of the various events. Kerry Motor Club is proud to play a role in making Tralee a hive of activity this weekend and we wish our fellow organising clubs the best of luck with their events too.”
