Weather brutal today so a quick walk up torc was all we could do really.

I cannot spend a full day indoors so this short walk was needed for us all to get some air into the lungs.

Online client : another young guy from Armagh who works long days but still manages to fit in 4 gym sessions a week. Preps his meals and gets as much sleep as he can even with early starts and late home.

Jack wanted to learn the correct way of bulking (putting on as much muscle as possible). He did it before but not the right way.

I explained the first thing you must do when going into a bulk is to make your body more receptive by pealing off a few layers of bodyfat and reducing inflammation. If you pile the calories in while holding bodyfat & inflammation you’re only going one way, piling on more bodyfat and more inflammation. The key is to be in good enough condition and gradually increase your surplus as you go, not all at once. Weekly or fortnightly slight increases to keep digestion in check.

We started Jack at approx 2700 cals and we gradually brought him up to just over 3000 over 12 weeks.

We wanted to keep a slight deficit while improving energy, strength, performance and recovery. He has also being getting leaner in the process. Calories will stay here now for the next 3 weeks before we start increasing again just to have him primed and ready to take more cals to increase strength and put in more dense muscle.

Jack has lost approx 9lbs in weight but muscle is looking full and ready for more. Jack did a phase of upper / lower body training and is now gone into push, pull, legs split which will test him even more and bring out the best in him.

Watch this space. Excited to see how the coming months go and where we can bring his physique.

Well done Jack so far on this journey.

The days of men being closed off and saying how they feel to the next person are well gone or so they should be but social media can portray these men as weak when in reality they are the strong ones.

I’m proud to say I’m emotional and can open up about my struggles but it’s finding the right person who will listen I find is the problem.

Most people don’t want to know you when you struggle but when you’re flying it they’re all about you.

These people I take with a pinch of salt these days.

Be there. Listen. Give a s**t. Support.

🙏🙏

“Never build a house without foundation “

This phrase was said to me from a bodybuilder, PT in the gym I worked in 25 years ago and he’s a judge in the bodybuilding competitions.

This meant you don’t just train upperbody.

I definitely don’t have the biggest of legs but I always train them once a week because I love building my body.

If you’re building a body, build all of it. Not just the areas or muscle groups you like to train.

A lot of women like to just build a b***y, I think a strong back on a woman or shoulders is very attractive to me. .

The art of bodybuilding is one thing we all enjoy to do at some stage of our lives.

Online client:

Conor is one of two young men from Tyrone (him & his mate Jack) who were recommended me as a coach by a friend of mine & theirs.

Conor jumped onboard with a few goals in mind.

- Pull back some bodyfat
- Learn more about nutrition & bodybuilding
- Build muscle & feel good in clothes
- Look good for holidays coming up
- Find structure & discipline

In 12 weeks he dropped 30 lbs weight and has built a good rig so far, to be continued post holidays.

I’m a stickler for looking at clients faces from the start to now.

Start: his face was inflamed, bags under his eyes, a bit of bodyfat, tired looking and someone that looked like they were a bit lost seeking some direction and structure.

I will take a small percentage of credit for the direction, structure and plan but my god the effort by this guy was second to none. Stepping away from weekends out with mates as he was committed, training food hydration was nailed. Sleep was good too even though he’s busy.

There’s two types of people.

One that will follow the plan to a tee and get insane results and the other who will get results but in a longer time frame as they’re not following plan fully but that’s fine too as long as you reach your target at some stage.

Extremely proud of Conor and all the hard work he has put in over this past 3 months. Go and enjoy your holidays buddy and I’ll see you when you’re back.

Proud coach 👏👏👏👏👏

Training days

Moderate to high protein
Moderate to high carbohydrates
Low fats

Non Training Days

Moderate to high protein
Low to moderate carbohydrates
Moderate fats

If you stick with this approach you will perform well inside the gym and outside the gym.

No fatigue, no hunger, no hormonal issues, strength up and recovery sound.

Tried and tested over 30 years with clients and myself.

This is a general approach for someone in quite good shape.

If you’re in a strength/building phase this will be good.

Fatloss phase will be slightly different.

Many of us admire, follow and sometimes idolize people on tv, magazines, instagram, facebook or YouTube.

But just remember if you’re a parent, you are your children’s first influencer.

I’m not a perfect parent but I do always question myself with what I could potentially do better, am I creating the memories I want to create with my kids and do I encourage them to do more and be more.

Also when my kids look at me and potentially want to mimic me and what I’m doing. Am I portraying myself in the way I want them to grow up to be.

- Do I put health at the forefront, not always, need to improve

- Do I encourage being active, 100%, all my children play sports and every time I’m with them we are being active.

- Is nutrition good, for me always, for them could improve slightly but not bad.

- Do I give them a space to open up about life? I’m very open with conversations with my children so that’s not an issue.

- Do I tell my children I love them and I’m proud of them. Every single chance I get.

- Do I encourage my kids to lie on the couch on their phones and play computer games. Certainly not but they do do it but I hate them staying indoors as it’s a waste of life, I was lucky to grow up in the times i did.

- Do I drink much alcohol infront of them. I used to back in the day but now I only have a few or just stick to the zeros. Don’t want them thinking you have to get pi**ed every time you go out. That was another generational thing we grew up with. Binge drinking.

- Will I encourage them to go to the gym. 100%. My daughter already trains in the gym and I gave her some bars and weights to have at home. I gave my son Sean the same but yet to use it, I won’t force. He has to do it when he’s ready to do it.

Moral of the story is that I’m not a perfect dad but I do always think about my children’s best needs first.

What I love about my children is that they all have their own characterisms and I don’t want to change that, I just want to support them be the best version of their authentic self.

If they are going to mirror some things from me, I have certainly changed a lot myself over the years to try to be a good influence to them 🙏
