People always talk about the macros or Macronutrients they consume rarely do you hear about the Micronutrients. The vitamins and minerals. Here at Fit Èire we cover the full aspect of diet and nutrition in all of our plans. No element is over looked, So just a brief importance of a little but very important Vitamin, Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is more than just a vitamin, it has hormonal properties also, and vitamin D receptors have been found in over 40 different types of tissue throughout the human body. It plays a complex part in fat loss, since it can exert it’s effects in multiple ways. Good levels of vitamin D influence the production and release of the powerful satiety hormone leptin into your bloodstream, which helps regulate food cravings and assists in controlling calorie consumption. Low levels of vitamin D are known to cause insulin resistance, which ultimately leads to blood glucose levels rising beyond acceptable homeostatic boundaries. The final outcome is, excessive fat storage, and an imbalance in vital neurotransmitters leading to depression, which can again lead to overeating.
Vitamin D also works with calcium to suppress the production of large amounts of cortisol, the powerful stress hormone that can lead to muscle wastage, which in essence lowers your basal metabolic rate, and fat burning capability, and it changes the body biochemistry to fat storage instead of fat burning. Another way vitamin D helps fat loss is by helping testosterone production, which is a potent anabolic steroid hormone that causes muscle gain, and helps raise the fat burning effect.
It is important to ensure that your vitamin D levels are at a good level. Getting sufficient amount of sunshine will cause the production of vitamin D, and this is recommended to be done on a daily basis for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. During periods of low level light, in the winter months, vitamin D supplementation is recommended, as this is a period where vitamin D deficiency is more likely to occur, and with it the detrimental effects of fat gain.
