In 1971 Sligo A.C was formed to promote athletics in and around the area of Sligo Town. Organised athletics had always been strong in the County with nearby Calry A.C blazing a trail from the mid 60's. Soon the black & white of newly formed Sligo A.C were appearing at local and regional meetings of track & field, road and cross country competitions. Under expert coaching, local talent flourished a

nd the club produced champions at regional and national level. Athletes such as Brendan Mooney (cross country); Joe philips (Javelin); Stephanie O'brien (Shot Putt); Kevin Martin (high Jump); John McDermott (400 hurdles); Padraig Callaghan (Decathlon); Michael Casey (Race Walking); Roddy Gaynor (800m);Adrian Hampson (1500m); and the late Ciara O'Harte (Sprints)and more recently Lucy Brennan (Marathon) and Emmet Dunleavy & David Kelly (Cross Country) have served the club with great Distinction. New training facilities located at Sligo I.T have added much to the club's structure and its enthusastic coach/admin staff, Terry Hayes, Ray Flynn, Michael O'Harte, Dermot McDermott and Ann McHugh will ensure that the club continues to prosper in the years ahead.

Well done to all to came out in the rainy conditions tonight to test themselves again on Rory Connor’s Cross Country course on Sligo Racecourse. Next week we have the final run in the series. If you haven’t done one come along and test yourself. If you’ve done one already I suspect you don’t need convincing as it’s excellent training and good fun. See you there!!

The truly remarkable John McDermott competing in the O80 sprint hurdles - as part of Team Ireland at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea. An incredible demonstration of what hard work, skill and determination can achieve, regardless of age.

All in Sligo are so proud!

Congratulations to Ross Campbell who was part of Athletics Ireland’s u18 development team to compete at the Scottish Championships in Aberdeen this weekend.

A fantastic 5th place finish in the 1500m steeplechase with a new pb.

A big thank you to Athletics Ireland and the Juvenile Competition Committee for their time and guidance over the weekend, and as always, thank you to coach Dermot McDermott for his expertise and support.
