The club's origins date back to the founding unit of the Association within the county, when the Collooney Fontenoys club was formed in January 1885, and that team participated in the county's first organised GAA games against the Sligo town club in November 1885, and competed in the inaugural County Championship of 1888. Since then a number of different clubs have represented the parish, includin
g Collooney Harps, Ballinacarrow and Teeling, and in the late 1960's Collooney and Ballisodare joined forces, initially as Collooney/Ballisodare, and later as John Mitchel's, before the Owenmore Gaels name was adopted in 1976. The Ballisodare club has since been reformed. The club presently operates at the Intermediate grade of adult mens football, along with a Junior team, and at the Junior grade of ladies football. Teams from Under-10 to Minor are also organised. Collooney parish teams over the years won five Senior Championships (1942, 43, 65. 67, 69) and two Junior (1930, 62), with success also at Under-21 (1982, 84) and Minor level (Harps seven times, Ballinacarrow twice and Teeling once). In more recent times success has been enjoyed at underage and adult level, and the mens team won the Division Four league in 2010. Considerable success has also been achieved by numerous girls teams at underage level. The club is presently in the final stages of the development of its new playing facilities on the outskirts of Collooney, and this is due to open in late 2011.
