Since at least the time of peripatetic Greek philosophers, many writers have discovered a deep, intuitive connection between walking, thinking, and writing. “Methinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow,” Henry David Thoreau penned in his journal. What is it about walking, in particular, that makes it so amenable to thinking and writing? The answer begins with changes to our chemistry. Sometimes it is just good to get away from it all. A day wandering in the Mournes provides a welcome break from the feeling of always being ‘switched-on’.

We normally love sharing photos of the stunning Mourne landscape so apologies that this one doesn't quite fit that category.

This grim collection was lifted by a regular walker (along the Mourne Wall, on the popular route up to Slieve Donard). It's an area used by many people, as they take shelter to have their lunch. It's interesting to note how much food waste there is, compared to plastics, tins etc so it would appear that there is a lack of awareness around the time taken for such items to break down naturally. On a positive note, there was less 'regular litter' so hopefully that's a trend that will continue.

Now for the scientific bit (ie approximate time needed for these items to decompose) ...

Apple Core - 1 month 😮
Orange Peel - 6 months 😲
Banana Skin - Up to 2 years 😱

Please take ALL waste off the mountain with you and dispose of it responsibly. Also, we'd appreciate your help in spreading the word, so can you LIKE and SHARE this post so we can get the message out to as many as possible 🙏.

THANK YOU 😉
