Portobello Angling Club

Portobello Angling Club Founded in 1995, we are one of Ireland's best-known and most active coarse angling clubs. We fish lakes, rivers and canals almost nationwide.

Although we are focused on match angling we welcome new members of any ability and from any background.

We're thinking of running the Portobello Spring League with 3 matches on Walls Lough and 3 matches on Town Lake, Killeshandra. (We'll be doing our best to avoid clashes with other clubs' matches.) Best 4 matches to count - any thoughts?

While the Dubs were taking the game to Kerry at Croke Park, Portobello AC were taking their game to Kilkenny at Walls Lough. The 9 man team set out their stalls to score big with carp on the pole. Some, like Chris Moore, chose to score points at close range, some looked to score from distance. Henry Norton it was who played right down the middle at 11 metres to win the day and put 30.650 kg on the scoreboard when the whistle blew, while Richie Keegan ran him close down the right wing. As usual there were plenty of cat laughs to be had and even the incessant rain failed to stop play.1.Henry Norton 30.650kg2.Richie Keegan 27.810kg3.Trevor Campbell 25.250kg4.Eoin Schweppe 19.230kg5.Chris Moore 16.350kg6.Sean Campbell 9.750kg7.Shay ‘Dunlop’ Phelan 6.400kg7.Christy Moore 6.400kg9.Colm O’Gaora 6.250kg

It was like The Lonesome West when Portobello AC crossed the mighty River Shannon for the first time in 13 years. NCFFI match commitments and post-Barrow Bonanza blues meant that only 4 members circled their seat boxes in the western outpost at Barrymore. The members hitched up their feeder and waited for the bream to ride over the hill and get stuck in to a proper shoot-out. Despite a few smoke signals the bream stayed hold up in their lair. Sean ‘Butch Cassidy’ Campbell and Trevor ‘Sundance Kid’ Campbell figured something was up and began picking off roach on waggler and pole. 1. Trevor Campbell 2.290; 2. Sean Campbell 1.010; 3. Colm O’Gaora 0.620; 4. Shay ‘Dunlop’ Phelan 0.370

Special thanks to this brave swimmer who put on a very special performance as we finished our match in Graiguenamanagh. Spectacular and spectacularly sore!

Portobello AC can’t keep away from the Barrow at Graiguenamanagh, and who can blame them when Graiguenamanagh Angling Club pegs the banks and puts up a sign while Waterside Guesthouse serves up a very welcome breakfast. This time only the fish could resist the town’s attractions with almost crystal clear water making the fish much shier-biting than in our Spring matches. Chris Moore and Richie Keegan took advantage of their end pegs to put plenty of dace in their nets using medium pole and maggot tactics.1. Chris Moore 5.6902. Richie Keegan 2.2903. Trevor Campbell 2.0304. Henry Norton 1.8005. Eoin Schweppe 0.9406. Sean Campbell 0.8307. Colm O’Gaora 0.7308. Shay Phelan 0.310

Killykeen was once Portobello AC’s favourite venue and the club held its entire 2004 Spring League on the famous lake shore. But it had been 11 years since the club had last held a match at Killykeen so there was a welcome return for our latest club match. The fishing was a bit patchy, with a noticeable lack of roach that is in common with many other venues this year. Alex Radu set out his stall for bream on the feeder at 40 turns and ran out the winner with 9.300kg, while Trevor Campbell took second with a couple of bonus bream for 3.890kg. Shay Dunlop Phelan took his usual specimen fish with a 2.250 bream. Thanks to the local angling club for accommodating us on adjacent pegs and we look forward to an early return to one of the best match fishing stretches in the country.1. Alex Radu 9.300kg / 2. Trevor Campbell 3.890 / 3. Colm O’Gaora 3.210 / 4. Shay Dunlop Phelan 2.440 / 5. Ferri 1.940 / 6. Sean Campbell 1.000 / 7. Henry Norton 0.920 / 8. Domhnall Twomey DNW.

On the longest day of the year, Portobello AC tried to outwit the weather and fishing gods by having a canal match at Longwood between 4.30 and 9.30pm. But the tactic didn’t really work and bites and fish were hard to come by, even as the daylight turned to dusk. Colm O’Gaora chose to fish black groundbait as opposed to Trevor’s bright red choice and the dark side won out on the day – with 22 fish on pinkie and chopped worm for 1.200kg.1. Colm O’Gaora 1.200 / 2. Sean Campbell 0.510 / 3. Chris Moore 0.360 / 3. Eoin Phelan 0.360 / 5. Shay Phelan 0.250 / 6. Trevor Campbell 0.110 / 7. Christy Moore 0.020

A chilly couple of months has delayed roach and bream fishing on many natural Irish venues so Portobello AC chose to pursue carp at Walls Lough, Kilkenny for our latest match. It was a beautifully sunny day for a change and the carp responded fairly well to a range of tactics. There were small carp galore in most pegs, but Trevor Campbell targeted bigger carp on paste and secured first place with 25.050kg, closely followed by Alex Radu with 22.300kg. Sean Campbell live up to his Golden Oldie status by netting one plump goldfish after another.1. Trevor Campbell 25.0502. Alex Radu 22.3003. Henry Norton 16.2004. Colm O’Gaora 11.1405. Sean Campbell 9.8406. Shay ‘Dunlop’ Phelan 2.9207. Eoin Phelan 1.300

With Inland Fisheries conducting a fish survey on the River Barrow at Graiguenamanagh during the week, Portobello AC thought they’d conduct a survey of our own for our latest club match. Top of the survey results was Brendan ‘End-Peg’ Collins with a solid 12lb 1oz of quality roach and dace, some distance clear of Ferri who took 7lb 14oz from the middle of the section. Once again, Graiguenamanagh Angling Club were the perfect hosts, pe***ng the stretch for our club the night before and making us feel very welcome – it’s no wonder we’ve fished half of our 2015 matches in gorgeous Graiguenamanagh.
1. Brendan Collins 12lb 1oz
2. Ferri 7lb 14oz
3. Trevor Campbell 6lb 8oz
4. Sean Campbell 5lb 14oz
5. Eoin Phelan 4lb 6oz
6. Igors Jersov 1lb 10oz
7. Shay Dunlop Phelan 1lb 7oz
