This is my first blog since I set up my Coaching practice. I want to help my clients to make the right choices for themselves, to be true to their own nature and to achieve harmony and happiness in their life. What do you choose today?

The Dreamer or the Doer – which do you Choose to be?

“Destiny”, “Fate”, “Luck”, ”If it’s for you it won’t pass you”. How often have you heard these phrases?

What they imply is that your destiny is laid out for you and all you have to do is wait around until it reveals itself.

I believe that we make our own destiny. Every minute of every day we make decisions and choices that lead inevitably to consequences, effects, outcomes. Like any time you set out on a journey, each turn you take will lead you to a destination. The same with life.… If we choose to passively drift along with the circumstances that we find ourselves in, then we are like a flotsom in the ocean, haplessly lead to the rocks, shore, wherever the winds and tides blow us.
“We each only have one life, there’s no rehearsal.” Now this is an old saying that is 100% true. So why not make it into the best life you can have. Why not take control of it, decide what you really want and commit yourself to making it happen?????

Attention follows intention. Once you set your intention clearly, then the universe, Omens, Gods, whatever you choose to believe, conspires to bring them about. I’ve experienced this in my own life and I believe that the “universe” holds all the possibilities for us to have what we want and need, but we HAVE TO REACH OUT FOR IT. (It will pass you if you don’t reach out your hand).
There are many reasons why we don’t act, the most fundamental one being fear. Fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of stepping above the parapet, fear of being ridiculed, fear of change, of ….( ) fill in your own fears!

Fear is a natural chemical response to change designed to protect us from physical harm, keep us safe from prehistoric beasties, or other tribes. In our modern times it still wants to protect us from these things, but it’s less likely that we’ll be eaten or gored by marauding wild animals – (unless you choose to run with the bulls in Pamploma…) So while trying to protect us, fear keeps us paralysed, rigid, stuck, and holds us back from taking risks to get what we really desire.

So what price do we pay for letting fear stop us from being true to ourselves? If at the end of our life we look back and consider what we did, will we see all the opportunities we missed because we were afraid to take them? Will we regret the missed trips, lack of achievement, waste of potential and talent? Will we say the saddest two words I know IF ONLY?

But the great news is that we can overcome our fears. We can tackle them on head on! We can ask a few simple questions to help us decide if this is a legitimate fear or just the current manifestation of our conditioning.

Is my fear REAL? Is there any HARD evidence to support it

Buddhist teaching is that our mind creates perceptions that we believe are reality. Each of us sees the same thing quite differently depending on our perceptions. Our fear of flying is a great example. We all know it’s more dangerous to cross the road than to fly, yet some are paralysed by fear that they will be the unlucky one. Is their fear real? Maybe some mathematician can work out the percentages, but let’s say it’s highly unlikely. It’s their perception that becomes their reality.

The good news is we can CHOOSE TO CHANGE OUR PERCEPTIONS and free ourselves of unrealistic fears. So if you choose to try to overcome your fears you can ask yourself some simple but powerful questions.

What do I fear is going to happen?

What is the truth of that?

What is the WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN?

Could I survive if it did happen?

How can prevent it while still doing it?

What will happen if I do this?

What won’t happen if I do this?

What will happen if I don’t do it?

What won’t happen if I don’t do it?

If my fear does come true what could I learn from it?

Hopefully the answers to these questions will help you to reframe your fears so you can live your life to the fullest.
