Our opening hole was given the name 'First' in 1899, though it was played as the 9th on the original nine-hole layout from 1894-1896 when the thatched cottage clubhouse stood at what is now the back left of the green.

While the old version may have been a great finisher, the hole's current form provides a perfect introduction to the round ahead.

Firmness is the key ingredient to great links golf, and Gary and his team understand that. Thanks to their hard work, we enjoy some of the best links turf in the world across all 27 of our holes.

At first glance, 'Punchbowl' doesn't make much sense as a name for our 12th.

But in 1896, the hole played just 125 yards over a sandhill to a green in a hollow short right of the present green.

The green we play today was introduced in 1912, extended in 1922, and widened in the 1990s, converting this hole from the quirky blind par 3 to today's superb hole.

Slightly different angles, but it's easy to see what's changed, and what's not changed, between 1948 and today.

Notably, the square bunkering of 1948 stands out, as does the absence of the yellow nine.

There are few finer examples of simple strategic golf than our 10th.

Two bunkers dictate play entirely. Hug the left fairway for the best angle into the green, or bail out right and face the challenge of navigating the greenside bunker on your approach.

When Ben Crenshaw won the 1976 Irish Open, he played our 15th in 6 over par across his four rounds, thanks to the awkward sea breeze and upturned putting surface. After receiving the trophy, he congratulated the members on having the shortest par 5 in the world. Fifty years later, we still sympathise with his struggles.
