With over 190 divers attending the Kerry Dive Rally weekend, 17 boats and over 460 dives completed -the highly anticipated results of the Kerry Dive Rally underwater photography competition are in! Some fantastic entries despite some difficult conditions.
Massive thanks to our very generous sponsors Underwater Camera Store and INON japan who provided some amazing prizes for Ireland's premier underwater photography competition!
**Judge’s Comment**
Wide Angle & Overall Winner - Crayfish 2 Tanks Photography.ie
Prize - Inon S220 Strobe courtesy of INON japan
A beautifully composed shot in challenging conditions. The crawfish is nicely positioned front-on in its rocky crevice and has great presence in the foreground, while the antennae extended across the frame and the diver above completes the picture. Technically demanding to balance strobe-lit subject against ambient mid-water and a backlit diver. A deserving overall winner. JC
Macro Winner - Comb Jelly: Clive Tanner
Prize - Flip Snoot Pro for your choice of Strobe courtesy of Underwater Camera Store

Straight away this scene shows lovely context for the subject. Conditions were tough on the day and this image shows a clever choice of subject combined with skillful control and balance of the lighting- NM
B&W Category Kev L Films
Prize - Pair of dome diffusers for choice of Strobe courtesy of Underwater Camera Store

“This striking capture has likely been rendered into B&W from a colour original. In doing so the creator transforms an underwater tunnel swim-through into a dramatic and immersive visual narrative. The diver’s silhouette, perfectly framed within the narrow submerged tunnel at Dolus Head, directs the eye toward the powerful beam of light that reveals the scale and texture of a submerged landscape, while instilling the sense of mystery that draws explorers into the submerged underworld. The photographer has used contrast masterfully, balancing deep shadows with subtle detail in the rock face to create a strong sense of depth and atmosphere. A compelling composition that captures both the adventure and solitude of underwater exploration, a worthy winning image.” NP
Highly Commended - Diver with egg: 2 Tanks Photography.ie
Prize -Signed copy of 'Beneath Irish Seas' courtesy of Nigel Motyer

After I had my initial run through of all the images submitted, this was the one that stayed with me the most. I love use of selective lighting to focus the attention on the main subject areas, the eyes and the whole intact egg. The image is enhanced by great post processing to hammer home the graphic nature of the shot. A natural magazine cover shot! -NM

Thanks to our judges for their hard work, patience and giving their time to review all the entries - John Collins Photography, Nick Pfeiffer and Nigel Motyer

From the same weekend as the recent dive rally post — this is a Devonshire cup coral (Caryophyllia smithii), photographed in Kerry during the Inbhear Scéine Kerry Sub Aqua Club Dive Rally. Shot with the Canon R5 Mark II in the INON X-2 housing, 100mm macro lens.
Caryophyllia smithii is a solitary, azooxanthellate coral — it gets no energy from sunlight, surviving entirely by catching plankton with those translucent tentacles. In conditions that were frankly atrocious — phytoplankton bloom, surge, low visibility — the combination of the R5 Mark II sensor and side lighting pulled out detail I genuinely wasn't expecting.

INON Ireland was proud to sponsor the underwater photography competition at the rally, with an INON S-220 strobe as the overall prize. Winners to be announced shortly.
