FOOT STRIKE FOR FASTER ACCELERATION

If you look at the 3 kinograms below, you’ll notice how strikes under his body with his right foot but strikes in front of his center of mass (COM) on his left side.

Why is it important to strike under your COM?

1️⃣To prevent increased braking forces, you don’t want to be braking as you accelerate.
2️⃣Allows you to project your body forward more efficiently.
3️⃣Striking under your COM = decreased workload on the posterior chain and in particular the hamstring.

The dotted line represents his COM.
The blue line is his right leg and pink his left.
The red line indicates how far in front of his COM he strikes. If you look at Step 3, the number is 23.

Now this has got better in 8 weeks but we still need more improvements.

Insights like this are invaluable for making the right training decisions.

This is all part of what is included in our speed camp package.

Next camp starts on the 23rd of October and again the January.

Why just looking at the jump height on a CMJ doesn’t tell the full story 😳

Jump height has always been the single most used gauge of progress on the CMJ test for a long time now. I used to always look at my athletes jump height as a means to assess progress and I still do think it’s very valuable but since I’ve had the force plates (and the opportunity to see so many more metrics) I’ve come to realise that your jump height is just a small piece of the overall puzzle. 🧩

If you look at pics 2-4, you’ll see multiple metrics from one of my athletes CMJ.

This athlete, not 😁 best ever jump height from 49 recorded jumps is 32cm.

*** We get our athletes to perform 3 jumps at every training session so we can get a more accurate look at trends over time.

She jumped 30cm on this particular jump which is 2cm less than her best but ALOT of other very important performance metrics were UP⬆️

Metrics such as:
- Time to take off (which we look for a decrease)
- Braking rate of force development.
- Peak relative power.
- Peak relative force.
- Peak propulsive (jumping) power.
- MRSI (modified reactive strength index)
