The classical mat sequence builds in challenge and complexity over the 34 exercises, starting with flexion, then moving the spine through extension, rotation, side flexion and finally a combinations of these movements; challenging both strength and flexibility. The beauty is each exercise prepares the body for the next, resulting in a full body workout.
For example, the Hundred (top left image) is the warmup - connecting the mind and breathing to the movement; the Rollover (bottom left) follows not long after, requiring additional strength and coordination; and the Teaser (middle right) challenges control and stamina towards the end of the sequence. All 3 movements aim to create a similar shape with the spine, hips and legs, but due to the inversion or amount of contact with the mat, the body is challenged differently each time.
