It is with great sadness that the committee and members of Newcastle West Cycling Club extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Shane O'Brien, who tragically lost his life this week.
Shane was a young man who was known and admired throughout the cycling community. He was bright, mature beyond his years, quick with a smile, and always carried himself with kindness and respect. On the bike, he was a fierce competitor; off the bike, he was a true gentleman who was highly regarded by all who knew him.
Earlier this year, Shane achieved an outstanding result by finishing 2nd in the Lacey Cup at just 16 years of age. It was a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the talent, dedication, and promise he possessed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Shane's family, friends, teammates, fellow competitors, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him during this incredibly difficult time.
May he rest in peace.
