Féile Peil na nÓg

Day 1: Our Féile panel arrived in Moate today, 22nd June, to a warm reception from our hosts. We quickly had to settle down to the business at hand and started our first game against a diagonal wind which would have favoured our hosts more than us. Direct running football, gave us the edge and we were in front at the end of the first fifteen minute half by 2-3 to 0-1. The second half was not as fluid as we emptied the bench and the game finished Dicksboro 2-4 Moate 0-2. Moate GAA Club then provided us with a meal of curry and chips before we set off to the Féile Parade in Portlaoise. Arriving in O'Moore Park at 6pm, we eventually finished the parade at 8.45pm before returning to Moate and linking up with the host families. Hopefully the boys will have a good nights sleep as they will have an early start tomorrow(Saturday) as they travel to Cloghan to play St. Rynaghs at 10am and then Lancashire at 12.30pm.

Day One Photos

Day 2: It was an early start today, Saturday, to make the sixteen mile journey to Cloghan, home of St. Rynagh's for our last two group matches, the first of which started at 10am against St. Rynagh's. This turned out to be the most competitive that we had to play. Rynagh's were quickest off the mark with three points on the scoreboard within six minutes before the 'Boro got a lucky break when a sideline kick went straight to the net.. On twelve minutes, St. Rynagh's were awarded a free which was well struck and dipped just below the crossbar for a goal. Just at halftime, on the fifteenth minute, the 'Boro again brought the game back to parity with an excellent goal. HT Dicksboro 2-0 St. Rynagh's 1-3.

St. Rynagh's started the second half even better than the first, raising the white flag three times in two minutes and they looked to be well on top. But 'Boro boys are not that easily beaten and the comeback started on the seventh minute with a point. We held St. Rynagh's scoreless for the remainder of the half, while at the same time adding two more points to draw the game, Dicksboro 2-3 St. Rynagh's 1-6.

We were now level with St. Rynagh's on points in the group but we also needed to put up a very big score against Lancashire in our last game to make up score difference. When this did not seem likely, the management emptied the bench, giving every panel member a run and we still managed to win. Dicksboro 2-6 Lancashire 2-1.

We can justifiably feel unfortunate to go out of this Féile after winning two and drawing one of our three group games but sport can be cruel. The boys can now relax and they travelled to O'Moore Pk to watch the Kilkenny/Dublin Championship game, following which they will return to Moate before travelling the short distance to Rosemount GAA Club to dance the night away at a disco.

Joe Walsh Cup

Dicksboro 1-11 Barrow Rangers 1-18

Dicksboro let this Joe Walsh Cup Final slip from their grasp after going in at halftime leading by 1-6 to 0-6. Level three times in the first twenty two minutes, we then got our chance to take charge of the game when Ruairi Morrissey sent in a long high ball which JJ Staunton on the Rangers goal batted down and Craig Cahill was waiting to score the first goal of the game. Within a minute, this was followed by a Ger O'Donoghue point to give us a four point lead. Ger was to add another point before the end of the half, following an excellent handpass from Collins.

With all to play for in the second half, we simply could not get ourselves going and a pointed free after three minutes was our only return until Drew Phelan's point on fourteen minutes and this proved to be our only score from play in the second half in what was a disappointing half from the 'Boro. Having said that, we were still only four points adrift with two minutes of normal time left in the game and anything could have happened. Unfortunately it happened for Rangers, who's goal on thirty minutes, left us with too big a mountain to climb.

Panel: Sammy Morrissey, Eoin McCormack, John Kelly, Steve Dawson, Enda O'Donoghue, JJ Hickey, Eoin Burke, Ruairi Morrissey, Willie Cuddihy, Ger O'Donoghue (Capt), Peter Turley, Peter Fitzpatrick, Collins Connolly, Drew Phelan, Craig Cahill, James Gittens, David Carroll, James Murphy, Michael Kealy, Alex Quinlan, Stephen Rochford, Matthew Nolan, Padraig White.

Double Delight in Naas

Dicksboro U10 hurlers enjoyed double delight in the prestigious annual Naas Juvenile Tournament, in winning both the Cup & Shield competitions last Saturday in glorious sunshine. Following an early 7.30am departure from Palmerstown the Boro lads arrived in Naas hoping for a victory in the annual Naas blitz last won by the Boro in 2007. First up were the `older` U10s who opened their account in the Cup with a good win against Galway side, Athenry coached by former county hurler Eugene Clooney. From this they enjoyed wins over hosts Naas & Limerick club Ahane. By nature of topping their group the Boro faced 2011 winner James Stephens in a tense semi-final before pulling through with seven points to spare. Following a well deserved food break the Boro faced Naomh Eanna (Gorey) in the final and after a hard 30 mins hurling emerged as Cup champions 2012 with a delighted Aaron Tracey Murphy accepting the Cup on his team`s behalf.

Meanwhile the Boro U10 `Óg` panel enjoyed wins over Athenry, hosts Naas & city rivals James Stephens to face hosts Naas again in the final . After a very close 1st half the Boro youngsters cut loose in the second half & danced their way to victory with Timmy Clifford accepting the Shield for Dicksboro U10 Óg. Indeed the Boro made history in winning both the Cup & Shield competitions in the same year in this highly organised & prestigious Naas Annual hurling tournament. Well done to all & mentors, Des Walsh, Pat Carroll, Jim O Neill, Martin Rowe, Eoin Maher, Sean Kennedy, Seamus Rowe & Aidan Brennan. Next Saturday the Boro U13s travel to Naas for a blitz & it was great to meet Boro exiles, Paula Tynan (daughter of Shem) & Aidan Begley (son of Eugene) on the day. Thanks to Naas for an excellent tournament run with great professionalism & brilliant hospitality.

Aylward Cup

Heavy rain meant that the venue for our second game in the Aylward Cup against St. Patricks, Ballyragget had to be moved from Palmerstown to St. James Pk. Losing by 1-5 to 0-4 at halftime, a lacklustre performance in the second half sealed our faith as we went down heavily on a final score of St. Patricks 3-13 to Dicksboro 0-9.

Panel: Cillian Breathnach, Mikey Hayes, Ciaran Cuddihy, David Carroll, Philly Hogan, Michael Fagan, Enda Malone, Kevin Nolan, Michael Rafter, Rory Glynn, Oisin Walsh, Tom Manning, Willie Cuddihy, Shane Maher, Brian Dollard, Aaron Duggan, Stephen Farrell, Enda O’Donoghue, Paddy Cahill.

Ballyboden/ St. Enda's Under 12 Blitz

Dicksboro under 12's had their first major outing of the year today when they travelled to Dublin to play in the Ballyboden/St. Enda's blitz. First up was Naas who gave us a very tough match that finished with a victory for the 'Boro at 0-4 to 0-2. After a ten minute break we had to face our hosts in what turned out to be another keenly fought game which we won by 2-1 to 1-1. Brosna Gaels from Offaly were our last game in the group stage and a victory here would put us in the final against the second place team. As it turned out we won this game well.

As Naas beat Ballyboden in their game we now had to play Naas again in the final. Knowing how close our first game was against Naas it was important to start well. Each player put his heart and soul into the game, and with all the team putting in such a work rate, there was only going to be one result and that was a win for the 'Boro. FT Dicksboro 4-4 Naas 0-2.

Our hosts then provided chips, sandwiches, tea and coffee to all and we extend our thanks to them for their hospitality and the way they ran the tournament. Each player was presented with a hurley grip and the team was also presented with a trophy.

Panel: Jack Tynan, Eoghan Moylan, Tommy Farrell, Eoin de Buitlear, Daire Maher, Evan Clarke, Padraic Moylan, Nicky Burke, Mark Nolan, Tadhg Butler, Darren Mullan, Bobby O'Mahony, Joseph Lacey, Liam Stynes, William O'Sullivan, Mark Kenny.

Joe Walsh Cup

Dicksboro 3-13 Graigue/Ballycallan 3-10

Our Junior B's earned a well deserved place in the semi final of the Joe Walsh Cup following our win tonight in a wet Kilmanagh. A point from Eddie Clifford in less than twenty seconds sent us on our way in what was a tight contest throughout. Fifteen minutes in, we were leading by 0-4 to 0-2 when a Graigue forward got the ball right in front of goal and struck for what was sure to be a goal but for Willie Cuddihy throwing himself bravely in front of him and blocking down the shot. This turned out to be a vital interception as the ball was cleared up the field only for Craig Cahill to score a goal for the 'Boro. The teams were level on three different occasions in this half but Graigue got their noses in front when on twenty five minutes the ball seemed to go wide but the game continued as there was no umpire to signal and our opponents capitalised by scoring a goal. The 'Boro finished the half well with three points, the last one coming from a very good passage of play when Enda O'Donoghue delivered the sliothar to Collins who picked out Ger O'Donoghue who obliged. HT Dicksboro 1-8 Graigue/Ballycallan 2-4.

Graigue scored three unanswered points at the start of the second half before Ruairi Morrissey got us off the mark which he followed moments later with a pointed free. Ruairi was joined in midfield by Jamie Lynch who put in a very solid performance as did JJ Hickey at centre back. A Collins Connolly goal on eighteen minutes gave us a two point advantage which was followed by a Ger O'Donoghue point to make it three. With twenty one minutes gone, Graigue were awarded a penalty which they took full advantage of to bring the game back to level. Not to be outdone, within a minute, Podge Lacey started the movement that lead to our next goal which went through Michael Falvey before arriving to Eddie Clifford who made no mistake. The 'Boro held on to this lead until the end despite Graigue getting another goal chance with only seconds to play but the ball was again blocked down by Willie Cuddihy.

Panel: DD Molloy, Eoin McCormack, Willie Cuddihy, Graham Egan, Podge Lacey, JJ Hickey, Enda O'Donoghue(0-1, F), Jamie Lynch, Ruairi Morrissey(0-2, 1F), Ger O'Donoghue(0-5, 3F), Peter Turley(0-1), Peter Fitzpatrick, Craig Cahill(1-0), Eddie Clifford(1-1), Collins Connolly(1-2),Michael Falvey for Peter Fitzpatrick, Drew Phelan for Graham Egan, Mike Kealy, Stephen Dawson.

All County Junior Hurling League

Dicksboro 0-12 St. Martin's 0-8

Played in Muckalee, this was our last game in the All County League Group stage and it was good to finish with a win. Mount Leinster Rangers have topped our group and we finished second, having won two and drawing one out our four games. We will now progress to the knockout stage of the tournament with our next game on next Saturday. The first half of our game against St. Martin's was particularly low scoring, finishing at HT Dicksboro 0-6 St. Martin's 0-4. The second half, strangly saw both teams score the same as the first half, 0-6 and 0-4 and five of the 'Boro's six scores of the second half came in a five minute period between the twenty first and twenty sixth minute.
