After a false start last week with the weather, the Women’s Commission summer crit league kicked off properly yesterday evening.

There was certainly a bit of nervous excitement amongst the riders last night, but everybody was happy to be racing. Three groups of riders were set off at different stages, with the B riders going first, followed by the A’s and lastly the A+ group who had a lap to make up on the Bs.

The catch with the B riders was made within a lap, giving those riders a chance to jump onto the group and try to stick with them. That worked for a while, but soon the A+ riders were out on their own hunting the group down.

A prime sprint after 9 minutes of racing gave everybody an incentive to dig that bit deeper, with Clodagh Molyneaux from Bohermeen being the first across the line for this.

Clodagh then rode together with the As after they were caught which was a very impressive performance of the young rider. By the time the three remaining laps were called, a select group of five riders remained and it was clear that they would sprint for the top spots.

In the end Ellen NiClerigh of Longcourt CC won the sprint, followed closely by Claire Diffney of Orwell and Saoirse O’Brien of Piranha Tri.

Many thanks to Piranha Triathlon Club for hosting this round, there will be no crit in Corkagh Park next week as the Stephen Roche GP is on, but we will see you all in 2 weeks for the next round!
