The famous James Braid designed this demanding 18 hole classic par 72 course with four par threes and four par fives, using the natural lie of the land, so to speak. The venue plays annual host to the highly regarded Mullingar Scratch Trophy and, over the years, the cream of amateur talent throughout Ireland and Britain has each discovered the menace that lurks beyond the gentle opening hole. Winners of this event include the legendary Joe Carr, major winners Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy, twelve Walker Cup and a half a dozen Ryder Cup team members as well as uncountable International team players
The feature par three second at a little over 200 yards is probably still one of the best par three holes in the country, and was left largely untouched when the club decided to upgrade the course in the early noughties, work which included USGA standard greens and tees; strategic bunkering and the relocation of four greens, with respect and sympathy for the Braid design. This latter work was done to the design of renowned professional and designer David Jones. The open plan spacious clubhouse was built in the 1990s
