A physical and fiercely contested encounter in Westport saw Monivea U16s emerge with a hard fought victory after a match that tested the resolve and character of both sides.
Monivea made the breakthrough midway through the opening half when Diarmuid Collins finished off a superb breakaway try following an intense opening period in which both defences were repeatedly called into action.
Monivea struck again soon after. A slick backs move, featuring several phases of good handling and quick ball movement across the pitch, created the opening for Ciaran McNena to dive over in the corner. However, the celebrations were tempered when McNena suffered a lower-leg injury while scoring and was unable to take any further part in the contest.
Westport responded impressively, crossing for two tries of their own. Monivea were rewarded when prop Matthew Flynn powered over from 20 metres out, shrugging off defenders in a determined run to leave the sides at 12-19 at half-time.
The second half developed into a much tighter and more tactical affair, with the Monivea pack producing a huge work rate around the field. Westport scored a try, but a missed conversion ensured Monivea held a slender two-point lead heading into the closing stages.
The decisive moment arrived with five minutes left on the clock. From halfway, Eoin Poland produced a great individual run to touch down and effectively put the result beyond doubt, sealing a deserved victory for the visitors.
Three conversions from outhalf Dylan Connolly was a notable highlight.
It was a closely fought contest that demanded plenty from both teams. While Monivea returned home with the win, both sides will take valuable lessons from a high-quality encounter that should stand to them as the season progresses.

Monivea U15s showed great character and resilience to claim a hard-fought victory away to Buccaneers RFC this afternoon, emerging on top after a well contested encounter that remained in the balance until the closing moments.
In what was an evenly matched contest throughout, Monivea never managed to pull more than a score clear of their hosts. Buccaneers, aided by the presence of several physically imposing players, continually asked questions of the visitors, but Monivea responded with a disciplined and determined defensive display.
The visitors' tackling was outstanding from start to finish, with every player contributing in a collective effort that prevented Buccaneers from gaining the upper hand despite their size advantage.
As the clock ticked down, Buccaneers drew level at 19-19 with just four minutes remaining, setting up a dramatic finale. However, Monivea refused to settle for a draw. From the restart, they executed a well-worked move to perfection, regaining possession and launching an attack that culminated in the decisive try with time running out.
It was a fitting reward for a team performance built on teamwork and composure under pressure. Every member of the squad played their part in a victory that highlighted Monivea's spirit and determination.
Monivea also extended their thanks to Buccaneers RFC for their hospitality and the refreshments provided after an excellent and sporting contest.
