There is a common misconception amongst race goers that races must award prizes in every age category. Not so. It’s up to every race how they choose to allocate their prizes and to what ages. Some go the more traditional route, starting at F35 and working their way up in 5 year increments and for men starting @ M40. That said, there’s no rule in the book to indicate that this must be the case, a race organiser can decide to start at F40/ M40 and go up in 5 or even 10yr increments and some don’t even do age categories, it all depends on the numbers entered in a race and the goal of the race e.g. raise as much money as they can for a charity. Races are expensive to run these days – ask any race organiser and you’ll see there’s little money to be made once all bills are paid. So if it is a charity event, unless you’ve sponsors on board for prizes, every penny counts. Same rules typically apply to triathlons unless it’s a national race and then races are bound by TI rules and race categories.
Thou shall not covet a prize that’s not there.
