Flashback to 2016 and Longford's famous win over Down (AET) in Pairc Esler by 2-24 to 3-17 in All-Ireland Qualifier Round 1. This was only the 2nd time Longford beat Down in Championship, and on both occasions the team was trained by Denis Connerton (2002 & 2016). Mickey Quinn gave a MOTM performance that day and the Longford goals came from Seamus Hannon and Mark Hughes.

Ahead of this weekends Tailteann Cup clash with Down at Pearse Park, here's a look back at 2002 All-Ireland Qualifier Round 1 when Longford beat Down by 1-16 to 0-14 in the first ever Championship meeting of the sides. Padraic Davis was captain and Paul Barden gave a MOTM performance.

Longford's first competitive victory over Down came in the Grounds Tournament semi-final at Croke Park in October 1968. The competition pitted each of that years All-Ireland semi-finalists against a team on the other side of the draw. The double-bill saw 31,133 in attendance in Croker that day.

2027 will see a first for Longford as the Longford Senior Hurlers will meet Mayo in Hurling Championship for the first time. The last time the sides met in competition was in 2005 NHL Division 3A.
