America today.
A Florida priest is facing over $500,000 in fines for continuing to feed homeless people at his church.
Father Bob Caudill has been running his outreach for decades, providing meals, showers, and support to those in need. But after the area was rezoned in 2014, the city labeled his work an “unpermitted soup kitchen”—triggering daily fines that have now piled up to over half a million dollars.
Despite the penalties, he’s refused to stop.
Caudill is still feeding the homeless while fighting the city in court, though a recent legal challenge was dismissed on a technicality. For now, the fines remain—but so does his mission.
The case highlights a growing clash between local laws and grassroots efforts to help unhoused communities.
