GB Rovers 5-5 Shountrade AFC
The u18 travelled to a wind swept Ballyhahill this afternoon in the penultimate league game of the season.
Already assured of a shield semi final and missing a host of regulars the lads put in a battling performance to secure a point.
GB capitalised on our failure to get to grips with the conditions early and scored a well worked goal to go 1-0.
Conor Fitzpatrick replied with a screamer from 30 yards.
But GB were using the wind to their advantage and got in behind our back line for a 2nd which was almost a carbon copy of the first.
Another swift reply from Fitzpatrick after good work on the right by Donnacha O’Connor. 2-2
We got caught on the break again to leave it 3-2 at half time.
In the second half our attack made good use of the wind and Jamie Murphy nearly burst the net from 8 yards for the equalizer.
It was a ding d**g battle at this stage with any clearance rising higher that 10 feet blowing back in over our heads.
GB floated in a corner and before anyone could make out where it would be carried, it dropped in our 6 yard box and was dispatched to the net. 4-3
The Fitzpatrick hatrick came as a quick reply. Jamie with the assist. 4-4
Then we finally took the lead as Donnacha O’Connor got the goal his performance deserved, latching on to a great through ball from Eric Whelan. Say nothing about the pass to the mother lads… Yvonne thinks Eric spent the afternoon studying for the leaving.
He had a great physics lesson out there today, tis all good!!
Conor “Sportacus” Fitzpatrick was still doing 90 in midfield at this stage. And physio Steve Condon had the uddermint out to Jamie to get him going again and 2 pints of water into Bustin up front, brought a bit of colour back to his cheeks.
They played some good stuff and the GB keeper was on his toes to keep us out.
Then came the goal of the game, the swirling wind dropped the ball out of the sky for GBs right wing to acrobatically spin up the bicycle as the ball dropped over his left shoulder and send it to the top corner of the net.
A draw a fair result and well done to both teams.
Big thanks to Stephen Condon for the help on the line. Covering for Wally who had a greyhound running in the grand national.
Great to see the juniors giving their time to help the next crop
