One of three Patron Saints of Ireland, Saint Colmcille was born in Gartan, County Donegal. One tradition holds that he was born on a flagstone called Leac na Cumha in the townland of Lacknacoo, that many of our groups visit during their stay. He was baptised in Temple Douglas midway between Gartan/Churchill and Letterkenny. Colmcille travelled to Iona, an island off the west coast of Scotland, but then part of the Kingdom of Dál Riata. Colmcille established an Abbey on the island and died there on the 9 June 597 AD, therefore tomorrow is his Feast Day when many people engage in outdoor pilgrimage, how appropriate.
