Lough Melvin report 01/06/13
Anyone who fishes Lough Melvin waits eagerly for the month of June and the first day has not dissapointed. The temperature is in the early teens, there is a perfect light west wind to create that lovely rolling wave and its overcast. Up to now the fishing has been patchy, last Monday we has 5 good sonaghan for a few hours in the evening, but the action was still mainly concentrated in the shallower waters of Kinlough Bay, the deeper water was producing the odd rise but no catch. There was a small hatch of may fly blowing off the south shore and the trout were nipping them off the top of the water, so any fish we caught were just barely hooked and resulted in many lost trout, but there was plenty happening. Hopefully these condition will bring it on in the deeper water. A quick experiment at the vice, i think i'd be confident with these boys on the top dropper on either Melvin or Arrow, if they work i'll put a name on them.

With our mixed bag of weather making us wonder whether it is January or Late April, Game Ghilly's Gareth Foley and i ventured out to Kinlough bay on Lough Melvin for a few hours on Saturday evening. We were pleasantly surprised to land a nice Gillaroo over a pound weight on the first drift and regular Sonaghan rising and taking a vareity of flies from a green octopus to an orange hopper type fly. There were also a few big fresh salmon jumping freely in the bay, however they were not interested in what we had to offer, but it looks promising for the months to come. All in all a very promising start and now itching to get back out.

These are pictures taken of my great uncle Robert Sadlier, Monien, Kinlough. He was a fisherman and Ghilly on Lough Melvin all his life. The trout he is displaying in the photo was an 11LB 8 0z wild brown trout caught on Lough Melvin in March 1964. The certificate is from the Irish Specimen Fish Committee, recording the authenticity of the fish.
