You never quite know what you’ll stumble across in Leitrim!

Recently, Brinsley McNamara from Weird Ireland shared a glimpse of his walk along The Leitrim Way. Along the route near Drumshanbo he discovered two incredible pieces of our past:

- St Hugh's Sweathouse: once used as a traditional cure for ailments, where people would sit inside to “sweat out” sickness.
-St Hugh's Holy Well, tucked into the landscape, once visited for reflection, healing and prayer.

These aren’t big tourist attractions with ticket desks or signposts. They’re just… there. Waiting. Hidden along forest paths.

That’s what makes The Leitrim Way so special. It’s not just a hike, it’s a journey through layers of history, folklore and forgotten traditions.

If you’ve been thinking about walking a section of The Leitrim Way, take this as your sign. Pack a flask, slow down, and see what stories you can find along the way.

And if you do come across something unusual, tag The Leitrim Way. We’d love to share it!

You mightn’t feel like tackling the entire Leitrim Way (56km) in this weather and honestly, that’s fair enough 😅

But there’s something really special about getting outside for a shorter walk in the crisp, fresh air. Especially on a cold day.

One lovely stretch we recommend is the Leitrim Village to Drumshanbo trail (around 7km one way).

It follows the water and of course… the highlight has to be crossing the floating boardwalk just outside Drumshanbo 💙

With the clear, still water beneath you and the lake stretching out around you, it’s one of those moments where you'll want to stop and take it all in.

You don’t have to “do it all” to enjoy the Leitrim Way. Even a small section can be enough to blow the cobwebs away and remind you how gorgeous this part of the world is.

If you’ve walked this stretch before, you’ll know exactly what we mean!

We recently shared the teaser for this magical short documentary by Markus Plawszewski from How to spell Leitrim?, filmed on the Tullynaskeherny Plateau, near Manorhamilton, along The Leitrim Way route.

Markus has very kindly given us permission to share the full mini-documentary and it’s an absolute gem. 🍀

Presented by local Tina Pommer, the film beautifully weaves folklore, fairies, and stunning Leitrim scenery together, capturing the quiet magic of the Tullynaskeherny Plateau and the Leitrim Way route that runs through it.

Be sure to watch to the end for those sweeping views, it might just inspire your next walk! Let us know if you have plans to visit the area soon!

Give this post some love and support the incredible creative work behind it.

Delighted to see this recent post by Gráinne from who finally ticked off some big Leitrim items on her 2025 list. Let's all use this as our motivation for the next month - the year isn't over yet!

She took on the Mullaghmore Mass Rock (did you see our recent reel on this?), strolled the stunning Acres Floating Boardwalk, visited The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, and walked sections of The Leitrim Way.

We know the lure of the couch is strong when the weather changes, but remember, Leitrim is beautiful in all seasons!

Forget the forecast, throw on a cosy jumper, grab a warm drink, and get out there. The quiet trails, the orange leaves, and the crisp autumn air make a Leitrim adventure feel extra special right now.

Let Gráinne be your inspiration! What Leitrim attraction are YOU finally going to tick off your list this autumn? 👇

🚨 Big things happening on The Leitrim Way! 🚨

The hardworking crew (aka the legends from Mountain Meitheal North West) have been flat out this week, improving a particularly wet and mucky stretch of trail outside Dowra.

This section was known to get fairly wet and soft underfoot, the kind that could swallow your hiking boot whole if you weren’t careful! But thanks to the brilliant work of Mountain Meitheal North West, support from Leitrim Development Company, and cooperation from the local landowner, it’s getting a well-deserved upgrade.

They’re building a brand new sheep wool trail (🐑), a sustainable pathway made using materials that’ll keep walkers’ feet dry and happy, even on the wettest Irish days.

Massive thanks to everyone involved and to the Walk Scheme Development funding for making this improvement possible. 👏

Can’t wait to see (and walk!) the finished section, no more swampy surprises underfoot!

Boardwalks like this one aren’t just scenic, they’re essential. Built to protect fragile upland habitats and boggy terrain, they prevent erosion, preserve biodiversity, and keep this landscape wild for generations to come.

Traverse the serene boardwalk of the Leitrim Way at Tullyskeherny, where ancient landscapes meet modern paths, offering panoramic views of Glenade Valley and a journey through Ireland’s rich heritage.

Even in the rain, Leitrim is stunning!

Cormongan Pier is one of the many stop-offs you'll find along The Leitrim Way — and honestly, it’s just as lovely in the rain as it is in the sunshine. There’s something special about those moody lake views and the peace that comes with a bit of rain.

Add this one to your list for your next wander around Leitrim.

Scardan is just one of them — and it's a beauty! Why not tick a few off the list while you're exploring The Leitrim Way?

Thanks for sharing this one :)

BIG NEWS FOR LEITRIM!

TWO of Leitrim’s stunning trails have just been officially added to Ireland’s Walks Scheme!

Fowley’s Falls and
O’Rourke’s Table
are now officially part of the Walks Scheme – and we couldn't be happier!

This means more support to maintain and promote these trails, ensuring they stay beautiful, safe, and accessible for generations of walkers to come.

Oh, and that's not all...
Thanks to new funding, The Leitrim Way itself is getting a glow-up!

More love for our landscapes
More support for our communities
And even better adventures ahead!

We’re excited for what’s to come and grateful to everyone who makes this possible, from landowners to local legends. 💚

Who’s up for a walk?

Thank you for the images Trevor Seery
