“Too many kids are being mistakenly put in the pre elite category, and that’s complicated.
A lot of these parents saying, ‘I want to see results or I’m yanking the kids,’ they’re deluded about their child’s prospects.
They should instead be thinking: if we’re playing tennis, can I create such a love for the sport that my kid will play tennis until he’s 70?”
↳ Malcolm Gladwell
That question should sit at the centre of youth sport, not:
• How quickly can my child move up?
• Which club/programme looks the most elite?
• What result proves they are progressing?
Instead it should be, can this experience create a relationship with sport that lasts for life?
Ambition is not the problem, the problem begins when adults treat childhood sport as a race towards a future that may never arrive and sacrifice the experience the child is having right now.
• Results fade.
• Labels change.
• Selection is temporary.
A genuine love of playing can last for decades.
Are we developing children for the next team, or helping them build a lifelong relationship with sport?
