Confidence in children is not built in big dramatic moments.

It is built in the small everyday ones. The ones we barely notice sometimes.

The moment they order their own food at a restaurant instead of you doing it for them. The moment they answer the door. The moment they introduce themselves to someone new.

Every single time we let them do something for themselves, even when it would be faster or easier for us to just do it, we are telling them something really important.

We are telling them they are capable.

It does not need to be a grand gesture. It just needs to be consistent.

This is exactly what we work on in Starburst every week. Not just performance skills but the quiet everyday confidence that children carry with them into every room they walk into.

The best communication exercise you can support your child with this summer won't cost you a penny!!

If you can give them the opportunity to speak up when they order their own food in a restaurant for the first time and look up at you afterwards absolutely beaming.

When they hand over the money in a shop and say thank you without being prompted.

When they ask a stranger for help in a hotel/shop/restaurant and realise they can do it.

These tiny everyday moments are where real confidence is built. Sometimes as parents we jump in and take control in these moments to save time and to get the job done but we are taking these speaking opportunities away from our children in the long run when we do this.

This summer try to atep back a little. Let them speak. Resist the urge to answer for them even if it takes a little bit more time.

Most of the time they are more capable than we think. They just need the chance to show you and this can start from a very young age.

At Starburst we work on this every single week. Building voices. Building confidence. Building children who know how to use both over the summer let them practise it in real life situations.

Every week I get calls from parents saying the same thing.

"She loves singing." "He's always dancing." "They're a natural performer."

This is part of what we do but I say the same thing back every time. Speech and drama isn't really just about performing.

It's about the child who puts their hand up in class for the first time.

The one who stops apologising before they speak.

The one who walks into a room and actually feels like they belong there.

The one who uses their voice to stand up for themselves.

The one who shares their opinion without apologising.

Yes there are props. Yes there are poems and feis' and exam performances.

But what you're really signing them up for is confidence.
Communication.
The ability to use their voice in a world that can be very loud.

That is what we do at Starburst.

I could not have been prouder watching this group last week. 🌟

Every single student stood up, owned the room and delivered a speech on a topic of their choice with confident pausing, clear articulation and body language and hand gestures that would impress any audience.

With Classroom Based Assessments just around the corner again next year these young people now walk into that room with skills most adults never get taught.

Effective communication is a life skill.

🗣️ I am now taking names for the next term of Starburst teen public speaking, beginning in Autumn.

Our Starburst students absolutely loved this chant last term.

Fun fact :

chanting isn't just brilliant craic. It's one of the most powerful tools we use in speech and drama.
