When is it too late to clip your horse?
Short answer… it’s usually not.
There’s a common belief that there’s a strict cut-off point for clipping, but in reality it’s much more of a case-by-case decision.
Whether it’s “too late” depends on several factors, including:
🐴 Workload – Horses in regular work may still benefit from being clipped to help manage sweat and recovery.
🐴 Coat type – Some horses grow very thick coats and struggle to regulate temperature, while others naturally stay finer.
🐴 Competition plans – If you’re still competing, clipping may be needed to keep your horse comfortable and looking smart.
🐴 The individual horse – Age, management, stabling, turnout routine, and general condition all play a part.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all date, it’s about what keeps your horse comfortable, healthy, and able to do their job.
If you’re unsure, think about:
✔ Is your horse sweating heavily in work?
✔ Are they taking a long time to dry?
✔ Are you increasing workload or starting the season?
If yes, clipping may still be the right choice. Every horse is different, and good management always beats sticking to a calendar.
