Spring sunshine on our faces, good friends and fabulous countryside, looking out over the Blackstairs mountains and heading up Brandon. A gorgeous day.

Lake Paringa, NZ. Another stunning, chilly early morning swim. The birds are kea, a large parrot endemic to the South Island. very noisy and they liked to investigate everything including sampling our tent!
It was once killed for bounty due to concern by sheep farmers that it attacked livestock, especially sheep. The kea is now uncommon, and received absolute protection under the Wildlife Act in 1986.

Kea are known for their intelligence and curiosity, both vital to their survival in a harsh mountain environment. Kea can solve logical puzzles, such as pushing and pulling things in a certain order to get to food, and will work together to achieve a certain objective. They have been filmed preparing and using tools.

Due to three flight cancellations we had two extra weeks on South Island NZ to explore it's incredible scenery. So lucky indeed, but also relieved to be able to return home too!
A tinge of urgency underlies the wildlife as it is in a precarious position due to all the invasive species. Many native species are on the verge of extinction. The conservation efforts are abundant. It is obviously working in some areas too when suddenly one can hear beautiful birdsong again. Rats, possum, stoats, ferrets and rabbits are the main criminals undermining the plant and food sources. There is an ambitious project to be free of invasive species by 2050. Everywhere we went there were different projects run by government and also local communities and volunteers.
A wonderful island for the outdoor living! Wild swims in glacial water, cooking on open fire, crossing high mountain passes with snow capped peaks, waking up at dawn in a rainforest......Tramping is the word for hiking and we walked for miles soaking it all in. Living mainly off grid, cut off from the outside world has been a tonic. Simple outdoor living has been absolutely blissful! It's my happy place, and what a country to enjoy it in! xx

White water rafting on the Buller river did not disappoint! A long held bucket list wish was fulfilled in heart stopping style. So much fun. So wonderful to experience river and gorge life. Swallows zoomed past us on the crystal clear water. Manuka shrubs waved from the clifftops.
Adventurous spirits from early settlers and gold panning days abounded. Gold is still being found!

We hiked for 15km through a wonderful nature reserve of native woodland to our base in Nydia Bay, in Pelorus Sound. The only access is by boat or on foot.
Wild country, people came gold mining here and timber felling, they must have been incredibly hardy people.
Food shop was once every 6 months they were so cut off and remote. .
Breathtaking scenery. Utter peace and amazement.
