Junior B Northern Championship
Barrow Rangers 5-15, James Stephen’s 14 pts

Right from the start Barrow Rangers centre forward Thomas Whitely showed his intent when at the throw in he gathered the ball and stroked it over the bar. He would finish the game with 3-03 to his name. Rangers had a Whitely goal and a Keith Flavin point before the visitors centre back Anthony Lawlor landed a long range point to open their account. Billy Hanlon and Lawlor then swapped pointed frees and after Hanlon landed a 65 Rangers tagged on three more unanswered points from Whitely, Daniel O Neill and Flavin. A pointed free from Conor O Grady broke the sequence to leave the score 1-07 to 3 pts after 17 minutes of play. Both sides were guilty of some poor shooting after this but with four minutes of the half remaining Whitely got his second goal. O Grady slotted over a free in reply. Rangers Brian Kelly got in on the act with a well taken point but again it was Lawlor who pulled one back with a point from inside his own half. The final score of the half went to Rangers full forward, Tom Brophy who knocked over a point from a tight angle in added time.
Half time Barrow Rangers 2-09, James Stephen’s 5 pts. The Village had only scored 2 points from play in the first half and both by centre back Lawlor. James Stephens opened the scoring in the second half when once again Lawlor pointed from distance inside the first minute, he then added a pointed free soon after. Any notion of a fight back was quickly dispelled though as from the 34th to the 41st minute Rangers blitzed the visitors with 3 goals and 2 points. Whitely got the ball rolling with a point in the 34th minute, two minutes later Flavin had the ball in the net and when Whitely got his third the score read 4-10 to 7 pts. Hanlon interrupted the goal scoring with a point but Flavin remedied this with his second and Rangers fifth of the game in the 41st minute. After this the game fizzled out and the home side got to empty the bench. Colm Dowling pulled two points back for James Stephens. Two of James Stephens substitutes got their last five points between them, Johnny McEvoy shot two while Willie Spencer got the other three, two from frees. Darragh O Connor’s point was followed by three from Hanlon, two from frees which saw out Rangers scoring spree.

J.J.Kavanagh and Sons, North Junior B Hurling Championship

3rd Round

Threecastles (0-18) v Bennettsbridge (2-12)

On a bright and fresh Monday evening on a very impressive pitch in Threecastles GAA grounds, the third round of the Northern Junior B championship was played in front of a very large crowd. Bennetsbridge, unbeaten so far in the Championship, were favourites and were the sharper team from the start, scoring 1 -01 within the first five minutes before Threecastles settled down. Both defences were on top throughout the first half forcing both teams to shoot from out the field. Threecastles were the more accurate and successful with good scores coming from Jack Cleere, Jack Boland, Darragh Walsh and 2 excellent points from Ben Lyng. Bennetsbridge kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a second goal before half time when a long range free, which looked like it, was going wide, came back off the upright and was quickly put to the back of the net by Richard Walsh. Credit must be given to the Threecastles team who never dropped their heads at this set back and went on to score further points to finish the half very strongly. The scoreboard at half time read Threecastles 0 - 10 to Bennetsbridge 2 -04

The second half followed much the same as the first half with defences in top form, the Threecastles half back trio of Daniel Rafter, Allie Rafter and P.J. Dalton hurling particularly well and being ably assisted by their midfielders. Captain Pat Trait lead by example driving forward when possible. However big Ben Lyng took over and stole the show with a blistering second half scoring 4 more points from play. All in all both teams were very evenly matched and neither could break clear of the other. Goalie.Derek Deegan pulled off a couple of great saves and Eamonn Hennessy and Ben Lyng both scored 6 points each. Another good performance from the Threecastles team and if they can tighten up in front of goal, they will go much further.

It was great to see the teams being supported by so many and both teams provided a great evenings entertainment. Well done to both.

2nd Round 28th June,
Muckalee
St. Martin's (2-16) v Threecastles (1-15)

In bright, warm and sometimes blustery Muckalee, Threecastles faced St. Martins in the second round of the North Junior B Hurling Championship. St. Martins started strongly and were ahead by 1-03 to 0-01 early in the game with Robert Shore, at full forward, causing most of the problems for the Threecastles defence. Threecastles eventually settled into the game with Jack Boland and Darragh Walsh working very hard in the middle of the field and the positional switch of Eamonn Hennessy to centre forward started to pay dividends. Both Allie Rafter in defence and Ross Walsh in attack were becoming more influential on the game, but Threecastles were unable to convert the two chances they got in front of goal before half time.
St. Martins started the second half strongly again and were finding it easier to score than their opponents. A strong defence and some good use of the ball suppled to the forwards helped St. Martins at this stage. A second Robert Shore goal gave them a comfortable lead, but credit to the Threecastles players, they never gave up on the game. They worked hard and fought their way back into the game and with a well-worked move between Eamonn Hennessy and Jack Cleere, Jack got the badly needed goal for Threecastles. Unfortunately time ran out on them and the game finished with a four point win for the St. Martin’s men. Looking back Threecastles have shown that if they had a stronger more determined start to the match that would be enough to see them over the line. But looking to the future they have proven that they are a team to be reckoned with and with confidence in their own abilities they can go from strength to strength.
Eamonn Hennessy had a great game scoring 9 points, 6 of those from frees. Others who played well were David Cleere, Daniel Rafter and Pat Trait who had a torrid time trying to keep an eye on the full forward.

All County League Semi- Final

Barrow Rangers 1-14 Mount Leinster Rangers 1-21

Mount Leinster Rangers qualified for the final of the All County League with this win over Barrow Rangers in Paulstown on Sunday evening. This game which was played before a large crowd was decided in the opening 10 minutes when Barrow Rangers failed to get going and in the final 10 minutes when they suffered a fail out. In between MLR were made to sweat. The visitors were 5 points up within 7 minutes with the opening score coming from John Coady followed by 4 from Denis Murphy, two from frees. A real rout looked on the cards at this stage before Cathal English opened BR’s account with a point in the tenth minute. Within two minutes Ciarán Doyle had the ball in the net to leave the minimum between the sides. Murphy put over another free from MLR before two points from Cathal Kenny on the trot, the first from a free levelling the game in the fifteenth minute. This was short lived however as by the twentieth minute MLR had raced four points ahead with scores from David Phelan, Derek Byrne, Denis Murphy and goal keeper Frank Foley who landed a long range free. From there to half time the scores came fast and furious, Timmy Brennan and Kenny replied with two from the home side, Derek Byrne and Ciarán Doyle exchanged points, a Kenny point was cancelled out by Byrne. With the clock ticking down to halftime Kenny converted two frees to tie the game but in added time Murphy pointed a free to put the visitors one point up 0-13 to 1-09. This had been some turn around by Barrow Rangers as in the opening ten minutes they had looked dead and buried. Four minutes into the restart and Kenny had the side’s level again. Murphy restored MLR’s lead with a point from a free and this was quickly extended by a point from Derek Byrne. Martin Bambrick made it a one point game again but a John Coady point on thee fortieth minute gave MLR back their two point advantage. Three minutes later Kenny landed a 65 and from the puck out he gathered and stroked the sliotar over the bar to tie the game once again 1-13 to 0-16. Points from Murphy and Coady kept Barrow Rangers at bay and with twelve minutes remaining Kenny got his side’s last score of the game when he slotted over a free. After this Barrow Rangers suffered a bit of a fail out while the Carlow senior side showed all their experience to finish the game out. Coady pointed again before centre forward, Edward Byrne added another. Whatever chance the home side had of recovery ended with four minutes remaining when Edward Byrne raced through and crashed the ball to the net. The final score of the game was a point from Derek Byrne. North Junior B Hurling League/Championship (Round 1) 20-6-15

Bennettsbridge 1-19 Galmoy 1-12

A fast and young Bennettsbridge side had the edge over Galmoy in this J J Kavanagh & Sons North Junior B Championship game in Bennettsbridge on Saturday last.In Kevin Brennan at midfield, the Bridge had a real live wire who covered the whole pitch as well as picking off some smashing scores.Richie Walsh at full forward, making a welcome return from Australia, was also in impressive form with five points from play.

The home side had a tonic start when a speculative shot from the left hand sideline by Brennan was allowed to hop over the Galmoy goal line after just two minutes.By the end of the first quarter,Bennettsbridge had pushed into a 1-6 to 0-2 lead,Galmoy’s two points coming from Brandan Phelan frees.Kevin Brennan had 1-3 on the board at this stage but Sean Phelan did shackle him temporarily when moved onto him and also popped over a Galmoy point as the half closed. With Richie Walsh roving out from goal and poaching three minors, the home side lead 1-11 to 0-6 at half time.

Galmoy did better after the break but six Bridge players went on to make the scoresheet in the second half.Goalkeeper,Ben Tynan did thwart three Galmoy goalbound efforts.

Eventually in the 57th minute, a hopping shot from a Tom Phelan 20 metre free, did deceive the Bridge goalie but the home side were in command at that stage. For thehosts, good efforts were also put in by Tim Dooley,Shane Byrne Dylan Walsh and local photographer Maurice Walsh. Brian Doherty,Charles Brennan ,Mícheál Phelan and Leo Doherty did their best for Galmoy.

JJ Kavanagh & Sons North Junior B Hurling Championship Group C

Bennettsbridge 1-19 Galmoy 1-11

Bennettsbridge ran out comfortable winners of this Junior B Hurling Championship game played in sunny conditions in Bennettsbridge on a Saturday evening. The game got off to a lively start and when Maurice Walsh collected a ball out near the sideline he hit for a point but when the ball dropped short the keeper was blinded by the sun and the ball ended up in the net. Galmoy hit back with a pointed free after 3 minutes. They would have to wait a further 13 minutes to raise another flag and in that time Bennettsbridge put on 5 points including a well taken Joe Murphy effort and a well worked Richie Walsh strike who was covering a lot of ground. From the 15th minute to half time points were exchanged but the Bridge were in control and passing the ball around nicely. Two more Richie Walsh points and scores from Kevin Brennan and a fine strike from Shane Byrne the pick of them. For Galmoy a fine strike from wing back Sean Phelan was the pick of their scores. They went in at half time 1-11 to 0-6 and the Bridge management team could not be happier with the efforts of a very young panel. Tom Kiely and Richie Walsh were doing a lot of the heavy work in the forward line and the likes of Kevin Brennan and Maurice Walsh were picking up any breaking ball. For Galmoy Sean Phelan and Brandon Phelan were causing most problems. The second half began with probably the score of the game. Kevin Brennan won a ball in midfield and delivered in to Richie Walsh. Richie saw Maurice Walsh breaking away and delivered into his path and Maurice duly converted for a lovely score. The second half was not as intense as the first but the Bridge while sometimes over played things always looked like winning. Another lovely worked score was converted by Richie Walsh who had his scoring eye in for this game and when he was not scoring he was setting up some of the younger legs for one. Galmoy brought on Evan Morrissey for Brendan Sherman after 40 minutes and he proved hard to handle in front of goal. It was Thomas Phelan however who caused most problems and he ended with 1-1 in the final 5 minutes to put a fairer reflection on the scoreboard.
The teams were Bbridge B Tynan, R O’Connor, T Dooley, B O’Neill, E Murphy, S Byrne 0-2, L Dowling, K Brennan 0-7, M Shiel, B O’Neill 0-1, D Walsh 0-2, T Kiely, J Murphy 0-1, R Walsh 0-5, M Walsh1-1. All County League Quarter Final

Barrow Rangers 4-22 Piltown 1-13

Barrow Rangers qualified for the semi-final of the All County League when they enjoyed a comprehensive victory over visitors Piltown at a sunny Paulstown on Sunday. Mount Leinster Rangers await them in that semi-final. Rangers made the perfect start to the game when within the first minute after Martin Bambrick was hauled to the ground inside the box Cathal Kenny netted the resulting penalty. Piltown’s Kevin Walsh levelled the game in the fifth minute when his long range shot sailed into the net, a minute later the visitors were in front when Martin Power pointed a free. Timmy Brennan restored parity in the 8th minute. From there until half time there was a score almost every minute. Billy Hanlon’s lead point for Rangers was quickly cancelled out by Philly Kelly. Martin Power made it 1-03 to 1-02 in the 11th minute. Rangers regained the lead within a minute when Kenny drove a twenty meter free to the net. It was a lead that Rangers would not relinquish. Daniel Norris made it a one point game but Kenny replied with a pointed free for Rangers. Walsh and Bambrick swapped points before Andrew jnr McCarthy and Kenny did likewise, Kenny’s point coming from a free. After this Rangers went on a scoring spree knocking over six unanswered points from Cathal English, two from Hanlon, Ciarán Doyle and two from Kenny one from a free. The half ended with Piltown’s McCarthy tapping over his second point of the game. Half time Barrow Rangers 2-11 Piltown 1-07. Amazingly the home side would score the exact same amount in the second half while Piltown would only trouble the umpire with the white flag on six occasions. Within a minute of the restart Ciarán Doyle made it 2-12 for Rangers. Kevin Walsh replied with two massive long ranged points. Norris added one from play and on the 36th minute when Power converted a free to leave the score 2-12 to 1-11 it looked as though Piltown were launching a fight back. Incredibly they would go another fifteen minutes without a score. English broke the sequence of Piltown scores with a point and when Kenny landed a pointed free it gave the home side a 1-03 lead with twenty minutes to play. There then followed a seven minute spell with no scores before Rangers Timmy Brennan got the scoreboard ticking again with a point, Kenny quickly

added another. Rangers introduced Seán Murphy in the 49th minute and within seconds he had the ball in the net. (3-16 to 1-06) Philly Kenny’ point for Piltown was quickly cancelled out by a free from Kenny. Midfielder for Rangers Willie Hennessy then got in on the act with a point. With seven minutes of the game remaining McCarthy got his sides last point of the game, Rangers would clock up another 1-04 with points from English, Thomas Whitely, Kenny, Ciarán Doyle and Timmy Brennan finding the net. This was a very polished performance by Barrow Rangers and will give them a boost, with the backs giving away very little and all forwards getting on the score sheet. Some of the Piltown players had been in action the night before and that game was possibly still in their legs.

JJ Kavanagh& Sons Junior B North Hurling League Semi Final.

Bennettsbridge 0-6 James Stephens 1-15.

The scoreline tells all you need to know about this game with the Village side always in control from the very beginning. In the end it was a case of men versus chaps. The game opened with a point from Colm Dowling after 4 minutes after some good work by the midfield and forwards and when the ball was fed out to Dowling he made no mistake. Just a minute later the ball was in the net and this time it was evergreen Joey Murray who found space and made no mistake. Shane Byrne responded with a good individual point for the home team but the flag was hardly back in its place when the Village corner forward Mark Hoban slotted over a response for his team. Eddie Murphy took a nice point for The Bridge from close to the sideline but it always appeared to be a case of how much The Stephens will win by. There was stalemate for the next 7 minutes before Conor O’Grady put over a pointed free to increase the lead to 1-3 to 0-2points. Joey Murray had to leave the field after 8 minutes after picking up an injury but his replacement Matthew Mc Wey did not leave the team wanting and made an impact on the game straight away. James Stephens lost their goalkeeper after 12 minutes after picking up a nasty hand injury when he came out to block an attack and ended up on the receiving end of the Richie Walsh stick when he tried to connect with the ball. 2 more pointed frees from O’Grady and centre back Anthony Lawlor was only a token of the dominance the Village had over this Bridge team who were missing a number of players due to exams and work commitments. Pointed frees were exchanged before half time and when the half time whistle went it gave The Bridge management a chance to rally the troops and demand a bigger effort from the more established players .Bennettsbridge brought on 2 half time subs into the forward line but things did not change with the Village in total control and they clocked up a further 9 points to 3 in the second half. They brought on a further 3 subs and they made their presence felt picking up a couple of points to push for selection the next day.In the end it was a relief for the home team when the final whistle went but worrying for the selectors was the commitment of some players and a much greater effort will have to be put in to win any game. For James Stephens they brought drive and determination to this game and these are essential to win any game.

The Teams lined out Bennettsbridge B Tynan, Paul O’Neill, S Nolan, A Byrne, E Murphy, Patrick O’Neill, M Power, S Byrne, D Walsh, R O’Connor, W Murphy, W Duggan, B O’Neill, R Walsh, T Kiely. Subs used. T Dooley, M O’Neill, J Murphy

All County Junior Hurling League Round 5 7-6-15

Blacks & Whites 1-17 Galmoy 1-12

Blacks & Whites advanced to the quarter final of the J J Kavanagh & Sons All County League courtesy of this win over a depleted Galmoy side in Galmoy last Sunday.Despite being short some regulars, the locals put in a spirited performance against a full strength opposition outfit.Paul Murphy at midfield and Michael (Crow) Maloney led the way for the Skeough men who stamped their authority on the game in the final ten minutes.James Dunne was impressive up front for Galmoy, hitting five frees from five attempts and a cracking goal placed to the goalkeeper’s right hand side in the 37th minute.Goalkeeper Joe Dollard stopped a one on one penalty in the 15th minute and brought off a good save from John Lennon late on while midfielder Niall Doherty put in a great hour’s work.

After a quarter of an hour ,the sides were level ,0-4 each, when Michael (Mo) Maloney won a penalty for the visitors.Joe Dollard was in confident mood and dealt very capably in blocking and clearing Michael(Crow) Maloney’s shot. James Dunne pointed four frees while young Patrick Nolan pointed a brace for Blacks & Whites.Another young player,Galmoy’s Jack Delaney, pointed a smasher after a good run up the left wing.Stephen Maher and Paul Murphy then exchanged minors to leave Galmoy ahead by the minimum 0-8 tp 0-7 at the interval.

Patrick Nolan levelled immediately after the break from a free won by John Lennon. In the 37th minute,James Dunne grabbed a Brandan Phelan delivery and ,just like Galway’s Cathal Mannion in Tullamore last Saturday,he slotted a low hard shot to the right of goalie John Murphy.

However,a pointed 65 from Patrick Nolan and one from play from the speedy John Lennon soon had the deficit back to the minimum. Two good points from play from James Dunne edged Galmoy into command but Michael(Crow)Maloney was now in very dominant form at centre forward for the visitors. In fact he went on to hit five points from play in the last six minutes of the game.It was a good run by the same Maloney and a pass to Emmett Foley which swung the game as Foley struck the sliotar to the corner of the net. This spurred on the visitors and Maloney went to town in the crucial moments. They strangely replaced their free taker and then saw two very scoreable frees go wide of target but his replacement Tommy Farrell did point from play and set up Crow for one, as Blacks & Whites sealed a home quarter final against Carlow senior side Mount Leinster Rangers.

Friday 22nd
May JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling League, B&W 2-12 Piltown 0-14. Blacks & Whites were on top for the majority of this match but were made to work hard to see off the challenge of Windgap in round three of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior Hurling League on Friday evening. Having won their opening fixtures against Slieverue and Piltown, the Skeough lads were looking to establish a strong position in the group and opened well with points from John Lennon and Michael Moloney. Windgap replied with points from Philly Lonergan and Cian Ryan before John Lennon started a period of dominance for the Skeough lads with a well taken goal after 15 minutes. From that point to the rest of the half, the Black and Whites controlled the flow of the game and added another seven points to leave the half time score 1-9 to 3 points. However, the Windgap team rallied strongly and grew more and more into the game.
