I was out with a great group this weekend but we were out in very mixed weather…with some very dodgy weather forecasting. Saturday afternoon was to be clearer and Sunday was to be wet in the afternoon. We go the opposite. It all added to the course as we put gear on and took it off five minutes later. Lots of people on the course had some serious hiking experience under their belts but not a lot navigation. It's nice to identify what skills might be helpful on their next adventure and give them practical experience using those skills.
As the rain came down it was tricky to stay dry so we jumped into the group shelter for a time, it was a bit crowded but everyone hopefully realised what an essential bit of gear it is for that time when things go wrong. By Sunday afternoon we found some great contour features and confidence was high.
Good luck with the next adventure everyone and thanks for coming along.

Sometimes you just have to stand back and admire what’s happening. I had a great mix of 'relatively' old heads and young heads with me on the Rock Skills Intermediate course at the weekend. The young heads were styling it with lots of gear and asking twenty million questions…and listening to most of the answers. What couldn’t be questioned was the laughs, great attitude and the determination to have a great time climbing. Meanwhile the older heads were sitting back and efficiently acquiring skills and in one case silently pondering and assessing the tasks in hand which is exactly what you need to do to be a safe climber. It’s fair to say there were some great personal achievements but Viorel getting down the abseil after twice not attempting it was the highlight for me.
It was just calm decision making, really great to watch. you are being well promoted over here and never were discounts better spent!!
Thanks to Caroline for coming along and helping out as an observer....lots of laughs and a safe pair of hands.

Rock Skills Intro didn’t disappoint on Saturday despite a couple of very light showers. I had Caroline along as an observer so we got lots done. We started on the slabs as I think its the best spot for learning footwork and balance. It's always great to see people get the tie-in and belaying quickly so they can concentrate on their climbing. At times there is a bit of weight difference between belayer and clients so lowering can sometimes be an anxious time but with proper stance and thoughtful positioning that can usually be managed. We had lots of fun on the abseil, going down is often much harder than going up. Abseiling involves some delicate weight transfer onto the rock face. Operating from a height and looking into space can be difficult for people, but like everything it's a skill, once you do it once confidence grows. Thanks to everyone who came along and kept me laughing all day.

Glorious in the Galtees last weekend.
Kings Yard was the day one location
It was hot but manageable, the whitethorn was in full bloom and the navigation was great. We wandered to some new spots and found some new navigation targets. We had the chance to chat to a home owner along our route and we chatted about access and if we were ok to keep going, no problems but it is always good to ask and make yourself know to property owners if you have the opportunity. On day two we had the chance to chat to a local farmer out rounding up some sheep, hurling was the topic… we also checked that it was ok to be there and I asked about who owned the land there and how much was commonage.
Everyone was cruising on the navigation with lots of chat about future hikes and perhaps some plans to take an MS2…who know where then.
Thanks for coming along everyone.

Lots of sunshine last week on a navigation refresher day for some lowland leader candidates. I felt like I was on my holidays doing a pleasant few tracks and trails around Glendalough. Lots of laughs and lots of navigation ability. Lowland leader can be tricky I think. I’m always more comfortable navigating on open ground. Paths and trails can be confusing. We had a bit of head scratching along the way, resolving some tiny junction details on maps. But it wan’t all work. We stopped for a snack along the way…be very careful what you nibble on from hedgerows!!😂🤪😱🤢…I got no sympathy just lots of laughing. Having lots of local knowledge and flora and fauna info is a real asset on hikes. It can’t be all about contours and direction. Leaving people with a taste for more is always the objective. Good luck to everyone on assessments.

It was a sunny weekend …but they were a tough crowd with very exacting standards and they demanded accuracy!! No messing about with this lot…I had to have all my angles right!! Lots of laughs as usual on my mountain skills course and the sun made it even better. Everyone quickly got into stride and by the end of the course we even got some bouldering done. It’s great watching people grow in confidence and eventually I just sit back and follow along. The maps were popular as usual and prompted lots of questions.
I can detect a hike leader at 20 paces and there were plenty here, so lots of practise and keep the confidence going.

We had great weather for the Mountain Skills 2 in the Comeraghs at the weekend.
It was dry and cool with a very light breeze most of the time so the midges stayed away. It’s true to say I like my night navigation and I really enjoy seeing people learning quickly and exceeding their expectations of what they can do. We found lots of small features on short navigation legs and then planned some longer legs for getting us home in the dark. Those pesky slopes make it difficult as gravity always wants to pull you downhill away from your bearing. It’s great to experience walking in the dark and enjoy the silence of the mountains in total darkness.
Day two is always an easier day physically after the late night and we had a great time exploring steep ground and identifying ways to select routes and keep ourselves safe. Conditions were great, dry with no wind and lots of grippy rock so we choose routes that matched the conditions and skill set. Lots of laughs and lots of chat about up skilling and future trips and mountain qualifications. I hope you all have caught up on your sleep.

It was a great club night with the last night in Dalkey. The weather was good and the new club members were a bit spoiled with all the attention they got. I’m trying to reacquaint myself with all the climbs I used climb regularly. Dalkey Quarry has lots of climbs in the ‘lower’ grades with some challenging crux moves, often with some dodgy ledges just below you. It’s a great venue to consider risk and reward.
Thanks to the IMC for organising
