A snapshot of what our olders groups got up to yesterday. I love that amongst whittling and water filtration they also work as a team on the slack line, enjoy group games and are never too old for the digging hole!

A little snapshot at what we've been up to the last two weeks. Always an interest in lighting fire with flint and steel and a lot of children are leaning towards whittling and tool work but let's not forget the art side of things. We were weaving Mexican God's Eyes/nature eyes and making natural paints.... which were mostly used to paint the shed!

The past two weeks were all about tools. We focused on using the saw, secateurs, palm drills and tent pegs. With each new tool a child is introduced to comes developing new skills and new pockets of knowledge. These arent just using the tools themselves but also building on patience and perseverance along with seeing what woods we can use for various activities. We used elder for our beads and hazel for our wood cookies.

Having mastered fairy fires, our older children built ground fires. They were tasked with gathering all the different sized wood and tinder to get their ground fire started. When they got their fires established it was then time for s’mores. Leave No Trace is an important part of Forest School so part of this task was also to out the forest back to the way it was.

When dandelions were in abundance last week we made yummy dandelion shortbread. We picked only what we needed, ensuring there was plenty left for the bees, the children gathered firewood, weighed out and mixed the ingredients, lit the fire and soon the shortbread was cooked and ready to eat.

A great day back in the woods with our older children's group. One of the children suggested working on survival skills so today was about shelters and fairy fires. A branch had fallen so that was used for a natural lean-to shelter.

Summer camps are filling up fast. Book now to avoid disappointment.

These camps run over three days from 10am to 3pm each day. Children are given a sense of what forest school is all about through child led days where they will have opportunities to learn bushcraft and fire lighting skills, how to tie knots and put up the swing, ropes and hammocks, get creative with nature art and build as a team through games. We will have a campfire on the last day, making something yummy and cooking it over the fire.

These camps also give children time in the woods to con ect to the natural world and have time to just be.

A dedicated group for older children to switch off, challenge themselves, build friendships and grow independence through regular time outdoors.

Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays(ages 5-11): 3.30–6pm
After-school Forest School sessions where children can explore, create and thrive in a natural setting.

Forest Camps (Easter, Summer and Halloween):
Tuesday–Thursday, 10am–3pm
The perfect way to experience what Forest School is all about, with days full of outdoor adventure, creativity and connection.

CPD Course (June):

One of my favourite things about Spring time is being able to forage for wild garlic. We are very lucky to have a small patch in the woods where we gather a small amount and get to show the children how to identify it, when and how to pick it.

We had a great week making wild garlic pesto and flatbreads. The perfect combination!

An activity like this allows children to use so many skills. They work together as a team, taking turns at carrying out the different tasks; chopping, grating, crushing, kneading and more. They work on reading recipes and measuring out ingredients, refining physical skills along with confidence and independence.
