A few weeks back from a memorable trip to Japan, I finally realise what an extraordinary privilege it was to have been afforded access to so many of their great horses. Last year’s Derby winner Do Deuce (pictured) won the Group One Arima Kinen this Christmas Eve morning. I also had the experience of seeing Equinox at exercise and a few days later winning the Japan Cup. Triple Crown winner Liberty Island was another champion that I was introduced to in her stable. Add in the great stallions Kitasan Black,Kisuna, Contrail etc. And not forgetting the retired pair Johannesburg and Alamshar.
A belated and heartfelt thanks to all who made this such an unforgettable experience for me. ありがとうございました

We were pleased to welcome a film crew from the Green Channel (Japanese racing channel) to Rangers Lodge and The Curragh gallops this week. They are filming for a two hour documentary on Irish racing to be screened at Christmas. In the course of an interview I pointed out that Sunday Silence, the stallion that transformed Japanese breeding, had his origins on The Curragh. Birdwatcher, his 15th sire in direct male line, raced and later stood at stud on The Curragh in the 19th century.

What a thrill to meet up again with the great Exultant at the Parade of Champions at The Curragh yesterday. Exultant was broken in and pre-trained in Rangers Lodge before going into training with Michael Halford. He finished third to Churchill in the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2017 before being sold to Hong Kong. He was Horse of the Year in 2019/2020 and amassed over €8 million in prize money. He now enjoys his well- deserved retirement at his original home Ballygallon Stud.

With President Biden visiting Ireland this week,it seems an appropriate time to show this photo of a previous US president,Richard Nixon, meeting my father,Aubrey Brabazon’s horses on The Curragh in 1970. Tony Roberts is riding the horse in the foreground and my sister,Sally,is behind him. The horse on the right must have sensed the upcoming Watergate scandal and wanted nothing to do with Mr.Nixon!

New Year is the time to look back…and to look forward. Rangers Lodge pre-trained graduates won a record 91 races in 2022 and a notable feature of these successes is the geographical range involved. The wins came in Ireland, U.K., Germany, United States, Denmark, Australia, Bahrain, Norway, France and Sweden.
In contrast, our own Gordon Bennett seldom travelled further than The Curragh or Naas but his win in the William Hill Joe McGrath Premier Handicap (pictured) was a particular highlight of the season for us.
Another notable-and particularly satisfying- feature of 2022 was the emergence of the promising apprentice Yudish Geerdharry, who first sat astride a racehorse in Rangers Lodge just a few years ago.
At this busy time of year for us, with a yard full of recently- broken two year olds, it’s all about the future. Happy New Year!

At Rangers Lodge we pride ourselves in pre-training future winners on the racetrack, but it was particularly satisfying to realise that we ‘pre-trained’ an apprentice of great promise in Yudish Geerdharry, who rode his first winner last Sunday on Wave Machine in the prestigious Birdcatcher Nursery. Best of luck in your future career Yudish!

Gordon Bennett with his pal Korbous enjoying the autumn sunshine after his great performance on Saturday in the William Hill Joe McGrath Premier Handicap at The Curragh. That’s it for the season after three spectacular wins. Lots of time over the winter months for future plans and dreams!
