The last time Sam Maguire came to Islandeady was 1951. It was brought to the Gaiety Ballroom by Mayo forward and Islandeady man Peter Solan.

Peter is pictured here with his sister Margaret McCormack. The win was celebrated with cups of tea and the Sam Maguire was brought home to Rinnaseer that evening on the back of a bike.

Peter emigrated to South Africa and raised his family there. His family have treasured their Dad’s Celtic Cross and his son Brian was in Croke Park alongside a large contingent of the McCormack family to see Mayo end its 75 year wait.

Margaret was Grandmother to current Senior players Peter Gordon and Peter McCormack.

Also pictured is Peter with his parents, John and Margaret Solan, and another little piece of history- a signed menu from the celebratory dinner held in 1950 at the Royal Hotel Westport.

Our club is delighted to welcome Sam Maguire back to Islandeady and we are grateful to Mayo GAA for facilitating the occasion. We hope you can all join us on Sunday 13 September at 12pm for a community celebration!

Welcome back Mr Tuohy! 💚 ❤️

St. Paul’s N.S Islandeady gave a big welcome back to All Ireland Champion ( and 3rd/ 4th class teacher!) Mr Bob Tuohy today!

Mr Tuohy and his Mayo team-mates are outstanding role models to the children of Mayo. St Paul’s were delighted to give Mr Tuohy a huge Islandeady welcome back today on the first day back at school! 💚 🤍
