While the summer months were very dry and warm, for the past month we have had continuous rain fall keeping water levels very high. This will enable fish to travel to all areas of the various systems. It would be great if the rain would now stop and allow water levels to drop so that the redds and eggs are not washed away when seatrout spawn later this month and salmon in late December, early January.

I enclose map from EPA Hydronet station on the Casla river. We had low water levels early in the angling year and after some water in mid May we are now losing it to evaporation and run off. We hope next week will see some rain so fingers crossed it happens here.

After a slow start to the angling year caused by low water levels for the early months, we are pleased to report a number of salmon taken on Friday and Saturday. First salmon of the year goes to our Head Ghillie, Sean Bollistrum with a fine fish of about 5-6 lbs caught and released early on Friday morning and this was followed by local angler Geoffrey Fitzjohn with a fish of 51/2 lbs. On saturday, Jamie O'Donnell caught a fish of 3lbs 11ozs on a Connemara Black size 10 which he tied himself.

After 3 windy storms in the past week, water levels have now risen substantially. It should clear out the kelts( salmon that spawned during the winter) and hopefully bring up a few spring salmon.

As the year progresses, we finally got a flood in early August that has filled our many loughs bringing both salmon and fresh sea trout in numbers into the system. The month of July was poor and we had to close the fishery due to low water levels, high temperatures and concern for the many salmon occupying the lower pools near the sea that would not be sporting to fish for in such conditions. Last week with Glenicmurrin Lough filling it caused a good rise in water levels in the river and brought the salmon back to life. With 13 salmon caught and released between the 10th and 15th August , the sea trout are also appearing in numbers in the loughs in which it appears to be a good year after a disastrous one in 2020 and to a lesser extent in 2019. We have had two sea trout in the 3lb+ range and it looks like September should be good on the loughs if conditions are right.

Great to see the rain. It is allowing the salmon and sea trout to run the Costelloe & Fermoyle system. With high tides most of this week , I will be expecting a few salmon to be caught.

April 2021 was a poor month for the Costello fishery. There was no rain and while there was little angling effort due to the 5km restriction no salmon were taken. The system went very low and I suspect that we lost a lot of emerging fry in the small streams. This also happened last year and the previous year. Climate changes impacting? I am glad to report that following last night's rain and the expectation that there will be more rain today and tomorrow, we are already seeing a rise in water levels throughout the system which should see some fresh salmon come in and the late sea trout smolts leave.

With the salmon season for the Costelloe system opened on Mon 1st February, we have had a lot of rain for the past while and the river is bank high and will be like that for some time. We would expect that any springer salmon will get a good run up the system and the spawned salmon or kelts will exit the system. Around Xmas week , we saw a number of salmon on the salmon gravel and hope that the eggs will not be washed out as we need them all.
