It is with heavy hearts that that we learned of the passing of Joe Sweeney. Joe was an integral part of Greystones Rowing club right back to the 50’s.
Greystones Rowing club owes a lot to Joe and he will always be remembered within our club and also up and down the east coast a friend and a mentor to us all. Joe held many roles in the early days of the club and spent a number of years as chairman and was integral to the early success of many crews in the 60’s and 70’s.
The famous John Sweeney cup which was put up by the Sweeney family in the 70,s in memory of Joes brother John is still raced for to this day.
It is one of the most prestigious trophies on the east coast and many a crew over the years have fought hard to have their name on it. It would always be very special to Joe when a Greystones team would win the junior men’s race.
Joe has always been an avid supporter of the club and you would always find him their on regatta day cheering on his beloved club. Both Joes sons John and Ronan and his daughter Siobhan rowed for the club and his granddaughters Megan, Katelyn, Alanna, Kim and Rachel.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to Joes family his wife Ann daughters Aileen, Joanne and Siobhan and his son Ronan pre deceased by his son John. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
