A goalkeeper can make the save look spectacular.

But sometimes the biggest difference happened before the ball was even struck.

Starting position affects:

Your angle.
Your reaction time.
Your ability to attack the ball.

Get the starting position right, and you give yourself a better chance before the shot even comes.

How often do you work on starting position in training?

Football doesn't always give you perfect conditions.

Wet pitch.
Wet ball.
Fast shots.

That's when you really find out how much confidence you have in your gloves.

What's the one thing you look for in a goalkeeper glove when the conditions get tough?

Grip?
Fit?
Durability?

Can you read the shot before it happens?

Good goalkeeping isn't just about reacting to the ball.

Watch the striker.
Watch the body position.
Watch the planted foot.

The clues are there.

Your goalkeeper has just had a terrible game.

A few goals conceded.

A couple of mistakes.

Maybe they came off the pitch frustrated, upset, or blaming themselves.

Then you get in the car.

What do you say?

Because that drive home can matter more than the result.

Sometimes they don't need a technical breakdown.

They don't need to hear what they should have done differently.

And they definitely don't need another coach.

Sometimes they just need to know that one bad game hasn't changed how you see them.

Give them space.

Let them talk if they want to.

And when they're ready, remind them:

One bad game doesn't make you a bad goalkeeper.

Parents — what's the first thing you say to your goalkeeper after a difficult match?

You ask your young goalkeeper:

“Why did you come off your line?”

“I don't know.”

“Why didn't you catch it?”

“I don't know.”

It can be tempting to keep asking until you get an answer.

But sometimes they genuinely don't know.

They're still learning to understand their decisions.

Instead of turning the conversation into an interrogation, give them time to think.

Try asking:

“What did you see?”

“What were you expecting to happen?”

“What would you try next time?”

These questions don't tell them what they did wrong.

They help them understand their own decision-making.

And that's a really important part of becoming a better goalkeeper.

The aim isn't for a young goalkeeper to have an answer for everything.

It's to gradually develop the ability to recognise what they're seeing, understand why they're acting and learn from the experience.

Sometimes “I don't know” isn't the end of the conversation.

It's the starting point for helping them think.
