Our squash juniors are back with a bang!!!
Connacht Junior Open 2021
What a great bunch of young people!!!

Well done to all our Galway Juniors who participated in the Connacht Junior Open this weekend. This competition marked the long awaited and first nationwide junior squash tournament in 19 months. It nearly didn't happen with restrictions, but when the green light was given at the 11th hour, our juniors had their rackets up and ready to go!'

It was clear that our gang absolutely loved being back. It was like old times, but that each of our Junior had grown about 2 foot taller since our last pre-pandemic competition!!!

As we aim to rebuild our junior squash programme to its pre pandemic glory and beyond, it was very encouraging to see so many of our young members returning to compete. With players travelling from all 4 provinces, GLTCs strong participation was evident in the fact that our club made up one third of all entrants.

Super to see that for many of our juniors, the passion for our game has triumphed decisively over the pandemic. This weekend well and truly confirmed that our juniors have not lost the ability to have the craic and enjoy good times together in the club. It is wonderful to be part of a club community with such helpful friendly parents and extended family, who come to cheer on and support all our juniors. It certainly goes a long way for our volunteers to be part of such positive respectful and fun community spirit. It was extra special to welcome our extended sporting community with the arrival of supporters from the Rahoon Newcastle Hurling club to watch team mates compete!

Well done to each and every one of our players Your club is more than proud - Lucy Lynch, Katie Lynch, Chloe Connell, David Posseshin, Alexander Posseshin, Jack Clery, Ben Lynch, David Connell, Ronan Costello, Eoin Connery, Eoin Mullery, David Cafferky, Michael Cunningham Smyth, Lorkan O Toole, Conn Sweeney, Ted Silke, Quinn Ferguson, Jack Mc Nulty, Ben McNulty, Eoin Tierney , Robert Clery and Danny Lynch.

Amazing GLTC results too, with Galway taking home 3 Connacht Open titles, and 8 of our juniors reaching the top 4 in their age group.

Well done to our dedicated Coach Dave Noone and to all our winning juniors

CONGRATS
Rachel McNulty
(aka Rachel Buckley)
Connacht Open Masters CHAMPION
over 45.

Thanks to a fab bunch of Irish squash ladies for travelling to our club in Galway this weekend, to kick off our new squash season with gusto, resulting in a record high number of ladies playing at the Masters Connacht Open. A super weekend.

GLTC ladies were thrilled to see our own Rachel playing phenomenally well on our home courts, earning her a well deserved and hard fought for 1st place at this nationwide squash event.

Stepping back in time, our GLTC 1980s squash juniors, will remember Rachel for her famously irretrievable lob serve and her humble yet steely determination on court.

After just a "short break" from squash for about 30 years, at the young age of 45, Rachel developed a renewed curiosity about the game when her own boys began to play. On hearing the sweet sound of the squash ball in play, she unassuredly brushed off the squash cobwebs and coyly stepped on the court to give it a bit of a try. There were plenty of fresh airs and alot of laughs, but Rachel was instantly hooked, and by all accounts has never looked back. A few of us 1980s squash juniors found each other and got back on court again. Squash was firmly part of our lives again.

Since 2019, Rachel stared injury (and then the pandemic) squarely in the face and refused to be side lined. She sought to develop squash fitness at every opportunity, adapting as needed. As soon as the courts reopened, Rachel was back there brushing off the cobwebs again, this time all the more ruthlessly than before. Squash was needed!

This weekend, on her debut to Masters Squash competition at national level, and on the first Masters squash ranking tournament in Ireland in 19 months, Rachel showed what a dedicated and determined woman can achieve, by training hard, all while enjoying sport and keeping things juggled.

Rachel is an example to all of us women who have been unsure about whether or not to step outside our comfort zone and busy lives, to give sport a try. With all the reasons not to do it, Rachel chose sport and the new found fun and fresh purpose it gives. What's more she is arguably now at the fittest she has ever been and her game has expanded beyond the lob!

Rachel is well chosen as the ladies squash rep for our club. For anyone wanting to give squash a try, to have a bit of craic along the way, please know that GLTC welcomes all ladies squash players, of all ages and all standards, including rusty returners, brand new beginners and those with a thirst to have fun and/or to progress in sport to play competitively.

Leinster Squash juniors and Rosie Barry, President of Irish Squash were on Wednesday's RTE 9pm News seeking resolution from the Department of Sport regarding the most recent public health restrictions that have been placed on junior squash.

It is imperative that we do everything we can to advocate for an even playing field for our squash juniors following 19 months of disproportionate restrictions on our sport.

Our juniors were hit with huge disappointment this week. The eagerly anticipated kick off to the junior tournament season was unexpectedly placed on hold for all our young squash athletes. As a result there are NO competitions at present for vacinnated youths, no competition for players u12 who cannot get a vacinne and no competition for unvacinnated 12-18 year old players. No child or young person in Ireland is currently permitted to play ball at national squash competitions having missed so much already.

It is not possible to comply with the government request to produce covid certs for u12s who cannot get vacinated. We await clarity from the government on this matter, and we have been informed that this clarity is due 4th Nov.

It is crucial that our government listen carefully to the voices of our sporting young people and play fair. It is important to get this decision right for our squash juniors, for their health and wellbeing and for the future of our much loved sport. It is time to for all sports, and this should include all minority sports.

SHOCKING
National Junior Squash Competitions on Pause

Much to the bitter disappointment of our juniors, and at the cusp of a long awaited return to Junior Squash competitions, we have learned that competitions have been unexpectedly put on pause, awaiting clarity on restrictions for u12s and u18s.

https://www.irishsquash.com/covid-19-update-november-1st/

This article by Kieran Shannon relating to the impact of the shocking announcement of recent last minute restrictions on Basketball, notes so many points of relevance to our squash juniors. Let's hope the voices of indoor and minority sports unite and are heard for the safe, fair and prompt return of our juniors and to the sports that they love.

Sport is so much more than just a game to our young people, it's a whole way of life. Life has been on pause long enough.

Hope all Masters ladies squash players worldwide had an absolute blast hitting on court on World Squash Day.

We send warmest wishes to all our female squash mates worldwide whom we were so lucky to find during the pandemic and to train virtually together in SquashSkills and beyond throughout lockdown.

For us Galway ladies, being recent rusty racket returners to the squash game, the pandemic stole our game far too soon after our return. We found that we could continue to enjoy squash in some different ways off court during lockdown, training anywhere we could (in the school yard, local field, the beach or back garden) with persistence driven by the constant mutual encouragement from a powerful and fun bunch of ladies, sharing laughs, reality of challenges and positivity inspite of the pandemic, being robbed of our sport and 1000s of kms apart.

Hard to believe that 18 months ago, we were strangers united only by a common passion for squash and working for bit of health and fitness in the madness. With our what's app group friendship firmly cemented and shared squash fanaticism openly declared, we know we will all eventually meet when the masters squash world reopens, regardless of the vast difference in our squash levels and experience.

Thanks to you all.

To Gillian - whose New York midnight training provided the infectious grit that we needed and whose training from Manhatten bridge shared hope with us that there was indeed a world out there, outside of our lockdowns!!

To our ever positive Teresa - whose speedy agility training in the front garden in Boston and constant kind encouragement kept us light footed and buoyant.

To Juliet - who says it all in the video clip, joining us in ladder runs along the balcony of a Californiam home to the sound of the neighbouring babbling creek.

To Jules - representing Canada and Australia sharing valuable tips and tricks.

To Sue - our inpirational Scottish woman and natural leader, juggling so much but yet taking time to ensure you have celt-ified the group!

To Orla - our masters Irish women's squash inspiration, joining us at sun rise training on Pormarnack beach and then onward from Prague.

We hope you all come visit us in our West of Ireland club for some ladies squash in GLTC.

Each day we work to jump the hoops of life, and end up on that squash court for a hit, is a very very good day.

Happy World Squash Day 2021 women.
