Stay safe this summer. Knowing how to spot a rip current can help you stay safe when open water swimming.

Look out for:
✅Gaps in breaking waves
✅Darker or smoother water
✅Debris moving away from shore
✅Rippled or choppy surface

If you get caught in a rip current don’t try to swim against it or you will get exhausted. If you can, swim parallel to the shore until free of the rip current and then head for shore.

If you are too tired to swim, calmly float or tread water. If you can't escape wave your arms and shout for help.

To stay safe, always swim in designated areas with lifeguards.

🌊A rip current is a strong, narrow flow of water moving away from the shore.

Rip currents can be dangerous because if a person gets caught in one, they can be pulled away from shore.

Rip currents can be difficult to spot.

Knowing how to spot a rip current can help you stay safe when open water swimming.
