Very sad to see this news. These closures brought life and energy to our streets, gave businesses a much-needed boost and created a sense of community that we all cherished. Not sure how anyone can claim they negatively impact cycling 🫤 anyone who cycles the area knows there are loads of ways to cycle around the closed space 🙄
UPDATE: We’ve just been informed that the planned road closures for this Friday, 16th May have been postponed due to a legal complaint made around the application process. This case—brought forward on cycling grounds—is now going to court and will be heard again on May 26th.
Until then, we cannot legally proceed with any street closures.
We know how frustrating this is—especially with the sunshine rolling in, outdoor seating prepped, extra staff lined up, and all of us counting on this to bring people together and drive revenue across the neighbourhood. The loss of trade, atmosphere, and shared social space really hits hard, especially when we were all set to kick off a brilliant summer season.
We're extremely disappointed, but please know we’re actively working alongside Galway City Council to push for pedestrianisation—and for a vibrant, people-first Westend.
We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear more. For now, let’s back each other, keep spirits up, and remind everyone why Galway’s Westend is still the best end.
