It is with a deeply heavy heart that everyone at Clare Motorclub learned of the passing of a true gentleman and Irish rallying legend, Kevin Barrett.
Kevin was much more than just a competitor to the Club; he was a massive part of the history of the Clare Stages Rally and a pillar of the entire rallying community. Kevin loved competing in Clare, and he often told us it was one of his favorite events on the calendar.
His connection to Clare went back a long way; he actually started his rallying journey right here at the 1988 Clare Stages in a Mk2 Es**rt.
In later years, Kevin brought immense excitement to our local stages in his iconic Subaru Impreza WRC. We have attached a lovely photo below of Kevin and co-driver Sean Mullally pushing hard through the crossroads above Ruan village.
We will always cherish the memories of him piloting that car through the Clare roads, securing brilliant podium finishes in 2011, 2015, and 2017. Who could forget the 2012 rally, when mechanical trouble threatened to end his weekend, but Kevin’s trademark grit and determination saw him nurse the car home to a fantastic 4th place finish.
Beyond his incredible talent behind the wheel, through his backing with Triton Showers, he championed national rallying, but he always kept his feet firmly on the ground. He always had a warm smile and a kind word for our club members, the hard-working marshals, and the fans standing on the ditches.
One of our absolute favorite memories will always be the 2018 Clare Stages Rally. It turned into a historic family affair, with Kevin, his son Paul, his brother Francis, and his nephew Ian all taking to the start line. It perfectly summed up what rallying meant to Kevin - family, friendship, and community.
We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Paul, the Barrett family, and Kevin's many friends throughout the motorsport world.
Rest in peace, Kevin. The stages of Clare will not be the same without you, but your legacy here will live on forever. 🏁
