Last weekend the weather turned out better than forecast and two great spins were had on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures were very mild for the time of year and a few brave ones still had the legs out! Over the two days we cycled around Colligan, Modeligo, Affane, Villerstown, Lickey Valley, Ring, Old Parish and Ardmore!

It's been a while but we're still here! Still enjoying the backroads and country lanes and back photographing our travels. A few now from yesterday's sunny ramble around Ring as today was a bit of a washout!

Day 3. Airport spin

Mark was delighted at the thought of heading back up the viewing point for the first leg of todays spin. The airport spin normally is like a game of 2 halves. First half lumpy and the second half flat with a tail wind to blow you home. Sitting at the cafe in Santa Lucia looking up at the flags we weren’t 100% sure it was going to work out in our favour. It was made worse by the fact Bobo’s pizza took nearly an hour to arrive. After all the wait and drama of the pizza we set off on the descent from Santa Lucia with it’s windy roads in the hope of that infamous tail wind when we hit the bottom. Nature didn’t disappoint and we were blown all the way back to Maspalomas. Now this is where the real events of the day start. Just after 7:30 rider #8 arrived. Tired and thirsty from his long journey only to be disappointed that the boys in #6 had blown all the kitty money already on fizzy orange and crisps. So with not much choice left Rider #8 set off in search of some refreshments. The sheep followed and the rest is history. Day 4 would be a short spin as a result

Day 2. Look what the cat dragged in 😊

A 09:30 start to allow for some adjustments to be made to the hire bikes and also to pick up a stray cyclist. Tony tagged along today to experience the Soria climb and hope to avoid the gale force winds he had to contend with on Friday on his way around Santa Lucia

A lovely spin out the coast road to Arguneguin and the famous cement factory before taking the first exit off the roundabout and heading for Soria Valley. It was so long since we had been here that we struggled to recall how long it was to the start of the climb so the pace was kept nice and handy. A quick stop to empty the bladders and lighten the load before the climb started, one poor local got more then he bargained for when he went to empty his recycling with k***s all over the place behind the bin

Soria climb is approx 3.5 miles in length with an average gradient of just under 8%. A headwind in parts made it all the more difficult. Cossie full of beans and no p**s took off as the group found their own tempo. Regrouping at the top we had little refreshments in the local restaurant before hitting the broken road. The broken road is 1.5 miles long with sections at 18% at the sharp switch backs. Amazingly the local council had repaired the road to the delight of all the lads as smooth tarmac greeted us when we started the climb. We reckon it was repaired on shift work. Day shift did great work but the night shift must have been friends of jimmys as they obviously didn’t do a stroke and just let the job half way through.

Once over the top we stopped at the serenity junction to regroup and start the long and dangerous decent to Mogan. Lovely roads and a fresh smell of the pine trees were just some of the highlights of the decent. While regrouping at the bottom Cossie got a bit of a toss, he thought he heard Bobo said he was going to pay for everyone’s lunch in Mogan

Final drop to the port of Mogan and into our local haunt of Dennehys for a well deserved lunch. With damage along the coast road the road from Mogan to Puerto Rico is closed so you have to take a ferry to Puerto Rico to allow you restart your journey. Mark was really disappointed as he loves the climbing and was going to miss out on a few nice little digs. If you don’t believe me about mark loving the climbing, just ask him about his Strava KOM the next time you meet him. Please allow about 25 mins.

The ferry back was eventful enough as cossie’s uncle was the driver of the boat, money collector and guide. He must have been cossie’s uncle coz he told more lies in the 30 mins than cossie ever did

Off the boat and a 12 mile spin back to camp from Puerto Rico. A lively spin back that split the group and forced Jimmy to take a scenic route back to the house.

Day 2 done and dusted and day 3 planned the talk turned to the new lad arriving Monday. Cossie was rubbing his hands in anticipation of the redenning he had planned for his age old friend.

2022 Trip To Gran Canaria -Day 1

With a very early flight from Shannon on the Saturday morning the decision was made to travel up the night before. Any excuse to be away from home for another night 😂
After jumping out of the bed at 3 am, 7 of the 8 made their way to the departures lounge to begin our journey. # 8 wouldn’t arrive until Monday and thank god for that because a full week of him would have broken many residing in appartment #6 that week

We touched down just before 10am to a very dull sky. By 11 we were at the appartment and looking at a very different day. Pure blue skies and over 20 degrees. Bikes were collected and shopping done for the house it was time to get down to business.
Day 1 is always a shorter day to allow us to acclimatise, so we headed for Fataga via the viewing point. A short coffee stop at the local garage before doing a 180 and heading back for home. Shorter doesn’t mean easier , especially when you climb 3000 feet in 22 miles, but Mark was as happy as ever to start on this easy introduction. 2 GC virgins this year in Cossie and Jimmie and both were fast out of the traps, pushing the pace wherever possible. Bobo was back after a 15 year absence but it was like he was never away. The other 4 veterans were delighted to be back cycling in the sun after missing 2021.
All home safe and ready for a longer day 2 we headed to the sea front for some well earned dinner
Pa was excited all night as day 2 was to bring us up over Soria, but I think he may have forgotten about the broken road.

Sundays back road group spin took us east into a slight mist that disappeared quickly followed by a dull but dry spell, the group zig zagged its way on the boreens towards kill where the heavens opened, and we were drenched with a cold rain for 20min, our coffee stop was cancelled 😩 but the ups and downs of the lanes didn't change, just after mahon bridge the clouds parted and the promised sun appeared to warm some cold bodies on our wander back to base, a strange day weather wise but another mighty adventure once again.

Early starts and early finishes! A good group of 6 headed out early today to shepherd one of the group from the wilderness into town to meet the group at the normal start time. The 10 of us headed off for the boreens in the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains on a mild but very windy morning. A mechanical and family commitments led to early showers for some with the rest heading for coffee and cake before home! Another great day on the bikes for the BRG!
